Nice going there Isaac. Ive been through the area around Orpeus Island before, very nice fishy looking water. High Island must be slightly further south, but clearly the possiblity for success is similarly good. Out of curiosity how do you get your wolf herring? I try to catch my own but sometimes its tough to get enough of em'. I found the best technique was either to drift a small herring or throw around some small metal slices.

Do you rig your wolfies down the inside or with the hooks on the outside?

Bad Bubby,
High island is a few miles south of Fitzroy out from here in Cairns - best accessed from Deeral out through the Mulgrave/Russell River mouths. Its not far out 6 or 7 miles i think, a bit north of the Frankland Islands.
Isaac's lunch photo looks to be taken from the Frankland Islands looking back towards High Island in the distance centre of photo. I think that's Fitzroy you can see in the far distance at the right of the photo.

The last time I got onto a few wolf herring was trolling gold bombers around slowly. Picked up quite a few of them but they are hard to hook properly. You often get heaps of hits but few hookups.
I also want to know how you rigged them Isaac, as I'm keen to get out amongst some big mackeral. I've heard of a few techniques, like 7 x 8/0 gangs down the back line of the fish with a chin sinker or a series of hooks as stingers on wire.
I'd be interested to hear what actually works as I might target some wolf herring next time i'm out in order to get some bigger fish..
