    Mackerel

The last few visits to the straits had been frustrating as the school mackerel were every where but had only jagged one. This time I worked them out when I was on my second last pilly. They were biting as timid as bream, would follow the bait right to the boat then take off at 1000 miles an hour. Saw one turn take the bait & take off got the bait back with hardly a mark on it. In the end I'd wind in slowly until the bait was at boat and see the following fish take off, stop winding and as the bait would start sinking bang from the opposite direction the fish would come back and hammer it. Great to watch they would roll onto there side just befor hitting the bait. Was using 3 kg gear ganged 3,0's and pillies. Ended up with 5 mackerel and 2 flatties in 3 hours.

Straight out the front of Maaroom, past the last red blinker. They seem to be everywhere lately, at the northern end of L gutter, near Butchers creek in the main chanel.
