    Pine River Saturday 18/6

Started the whiting onslaught early Saturday morning and didn't actually go according to plan. I ended taking the wife and kids out and didn't wet my line for at least an hour. Bloody family.

Any way we started getting a few small winter whiting and notice some dark figures chasing the them up. Turned out they were squid.

I quickly rigged up two squid jigs and thought "maybe i will get a chance to catch some whiting myself" and give the wife and the eldest son a chance to waste their time.

Two minutes we had a double hookup and of course I was left covered in ink and puting thim in the live bait tank.

Got the sh!ts with the whiting and sat down and watrched the family get me a feed of calamari.

I heard reports of the whiting in plague proportions in front of the Sandgate Pool but was a bit late.

Ended up getting 6 squid and around 15 decent sized whiting.

I am planning on either a Donnybrook or Blue Hole trip next weekend. Does anyone have a GPS point for the Blue Hole.

    Till next time

    Cheers

We did not get to the ramp till nearly 2.00pm. Took my 8yr old, a neighbour and his boy.

Not my normal hours of fishing, but this was more a pleasure trip.

Whiting are a great target fish when you have young kids.

I kept an eye out but you were probably gone by then.

Picked up one fat summer whiting near the bridge on first cast, but unfortunately it did not continue. Considered doing a drift around bramble bay to see if I could locate a school, but decided with a late start we would head up river to a spot I know I can get fish. Probably got 25 - 30 winter whiting in the next hour and a half and then headed back to the ramp at around 4.30 - 5.00.

Settled on #6 hooks as a compromise. Gee those winter whiting are small.... With the kids, we ended up keeping about 15 fish. Otherwise I would have either let them go or just kept them for snapper bait. Never thought I woud be filleting fish that small. Luckily I saw a lesson from Sam's seafood so they are pretty quick.

Would have preferred a feed of summer whiting, but all on board had a very enjoyable time. So mission accomplished.

For those interested, we started out with $12.00 of live blood worms. These lasted about an hour. Fish loved them. But it sure is expensive. I also took a small pack of fresh but frozen squid. This cost about $4.00. Cut into thin strips, this bait will last 3 times longer than the worms. If you get in a spot where the fish are not fussy, as we were, you are better off using a cheap bait and just switch back to the worms when they slow down.

    Hey Cheech,

    Good point there.

We had a combination of live worms and Surf_Snipers preserved worms. The whiting couldn't tell the difference.

They were pretty finicky at the mouth of the river but we were there for fun. Any fish or squid were definitely a bonus.

    We went #6 hooks also.

When targeting whiting in the Pine are you on the drift or achored in a secret spot?

Might catch next time, give us a hoy.

    Cheers

I anchour up for most fishing.

Though drifting can be good if you are in open areas to find the fish and then anchour. What I was doing on Saturday when it slowed a bit where we were fishing was to do some long casts to the side and front of the boat. This let the bait drift over a large area. In the process I located another little school so fished that for a while. If the bait passed the area with no hookup I would just retrieve and re-cast.

Myself, wife and 8yo son have just started to fish the pine in my Dad's tinnie and was wondering what sort of combo would you recommend. (currently using cheap rubbish from supermarket)

Also we are catching a lot of whiting and have a question.

Are winter whiting the ones that feel a bit "greasier" when you hold them? And are summer whiting the ones that seem to have rougher scalesand lighter colour.

We only keep the bigger fish to take home anyway but wouldn't like to get pinged if we had a summery a feww mm short.

Also including a small fish... my son is wondering what it is

    My first post

    Many Thanks
    Freddy.

    Welcome aboard Blufish/Freddy,

Winter whiting have small grey blothes all over them where the summer whiting are a clean silver colour.

As for the fish in the pic, I have no idea.

Re fishing outfits I have made the big mistake of buying my kids cheap crap and have done so two or three times. If I had of gone to my local tackle guy and took his advise and spent around the $70 mark I would probably have been better off.

Go to your local tackle shop and get their advice. If their price appears to be too dear you should have got the idea of what to buy. Put that knowledge into practice and then go to your local supermarket of sporting distributor.

I might catch you on the water

    Cheers

mad man, good to see the cured worms worked for ya, ive been using them like that for years in beach comps and in clubs and although not as nice as big fat live ones they still work very well.

    cheers
