    Mud shallows wed night

With work being busy for the last month or so, i was getting toey to wet a line again , so Jason ,Mark and myself headed to Mud's shallows last night before the predicted rain and winds arrive.
We anchored up in close , burleyed up and didn't have to wait too long before squire came in the boat one after the other.
Nothin huge but happy to get a feed and almost bag out before 11p.m.
Total tally was 14 squire, two bream over 30cm and a lost and lonely sweetlip.
    Regards Darren

    Phil,
the 40cm + breamies must have been further up in the shallows.....
I kept tellin Jason to cast up in to the snags , while we were happy casting out the other side catchin squire....
But i think he got sick of tying new knots and hooks in the dark, and would only cast out our side after only a little while L.O.L.

    Good work there Darren.

We were out there last night as well. Fishing Dan and an extra. Chasing Bream in those shallows. Though it got a little too shallow when the anchour did not grip after a move and found ourselves in .4m and the skeg bouncing on the bottom. Oh well, you get that.

Got enough to cook up for bream sandwiches for dinner and a couple to take home. What a great night to be out. flat as. And so mild.

And Dan, I will not expand on your excursion to the ramp. At least I caught a couple of fish at the ramp while I was waiting, so I was kept entertained. Welcome aboard any time.

    Brent,
Yes i know, i know, no monsters......
Bloody offshore brigade are nabbing them all before they make it to mud....
But seriously, gee some fishos sure have scored some larger snapper inside the bay this year.
We did try out wider from the island for some quality models to no avail.
It's always a hard decision, whether to sit it out wider for the elusive snapper, or head into the shallows.
    Good luck Sunday mate.

Good haul there, just wondering, do you find droping your hook size to say 3\0 or 4\0 helps your catch rate. I have been using 5\0 and 6\0 penetrator hooks. but have only been getting small stuff. What bait were u using and how did ya rig it

    Re: Mud shallows wed night

    Andrew,
We don't use anything bigger than a 3/0 or 4/0
00 ball sinker, split shot, or preferably no sinker at all in the shallows, straight on top of hook - no leader.
15 to 20 pound mono , squire don't seem to care too much with heavier line - not like big bream,
and you need a bit heavier to contend with the snags.
Forget the broomsticks, you only need to use light whippy bream rods, and most of all......
FRESH bait , take your pick from squid, mullet, gar, pike, whatever,.... as long as it is fresh.
Your catch rate will definitely improve if you spend the time and catch some bait that same day, or even while you're anchored - catch the bait and take fillets straight off.
No lights, no noise, burley and a scotch.
Hunt around the shallows before dusk on a low tide to understand what is under you where you are going to fish.
Hope this helps a little anyhow....

thanks, sounds like a good technique. I have been using a 6-8kg live fibre with a 7000 c3 abu, 9kg braid. Using small sinkers but have been using bought frozen bait (Must be my downfall). Thanks for the tips
