Sambo's at Main Beach GC

As the start of the weekend was ruined by high winds, we went to stay with friends on the Gold Coast - Sunday afternoon decided to go down to Main Beach opposite Marina Mirage. Picked up some whitebait on the way.

The gutters and formations were lousy, probably ruined by the stong westerlies, so just cast out the back of the breakers looking for some choppers. Instead hooked a couple of Aust Salmon of 3kg each which put on some special aerial display, entertained some Japanese tourists.

I had always read that the sambos finished their run around Coffs, but noted a post last week that one was caught inside the Pin Bar. Obviously stocks are on the rise and they are coming further north. I'm turning mine into fishcakes, but what are they like smoked? anyone smoke em?

nice fish mate. they must be lost. i don;t think your table is where they intended on finishing there journey .

Fish cakes is the go. Try this:

Just a simple mashed spud with an equal proportion of lightly cooked fish, some chopped up bacon, parsley , onion & salt & pepper and an egg to stick it together. Roll it up into BALLS dip them in breadcrumbs, squish them flat and stick them in the frypan.

I was down at Main Beach (just north of narrow neck) on thursday evening and a few of the locals were catching a few salmon as well.

Most were caught on pillies fished as u would for tailor.

All Salmon caught were a great size and ran hard, especially in the white water!

I sorta covered that in the report, got em on whitebait. They were put on 3 x size 1 ganged hooks
