Thread: Is this rosy?

    Is this rosy?

Went diving off Moreton yesterday got some cobia( heaps around at present) gold spots, parrot, amberjacks and cod. Was diving in 30m north of flinders and shot this fish, which I think is a rosy jobfish but guys on a spearing site said it was a rusty small toothed jobbie? The photo next to tape was for the records as not many of these deeper water fish have been speared by freedivers. Any help? Cheers guys.

    Hey,

Thats a Rosy Jobfish alright.. Caught a few of them out at the 50's off tweed and threw them back thinking that jobfish carries ciguatera - Looked up Grant's and they said they are fair game!!

Let us know how they rate as a food fish.

Did you stop off at western rocks yesterday en route to flinders ? An unpainted stabicraft style boat ? 2 divers and 1 captain ?

Would be interested to know if you saw any cobes there ! As i didn't catch any that morning !!!

    Re: Is this rosy?

Yep that was me and my brother in our 98 stabicraft. My old man drives for us. We were just checking one rock at western rocks that sometimes holds cobia but there was none there. We saw a hundred or so cobia at at small wreck we know of in 20m. We got a couple of them and then headed up to some lumps just sw of hutchies and some north of flinders then worked all the way down to china wall. This time of the year the shallow reefs 20-30m are quite barren so have to move a lot to find some fish. Looking forward to another good year of spanish. What boat were you in Serge?

    Re: Is this rosy?

Yes, it certainly appears to be a Rosey Jobfish.

They can get prolific in the sub-tropical waters from Fraser Island north. Must say I have caught them off the nth end of Barwon banks in good numbers but not size. Best fishing for them was East of South East Bombie, which is located south of Lady Elliot island in the Bunker Group. They were coming up on paternoster rigs, 2 x 2 at 2 -5 kgs each.

I like the fish, as they have a good recovery rate of fillet and are in the same taste category as Snapper. In fact they are marketed in retail shops as ' King Snapper '.

As far as I undestand it they are known coloquially as King Snapper as they are often caught amoungst a school of snapper, but you'll often only catch one or two while you'll catch 20 or so snapper - thus they are called "Kings" of the snapper school

    Hi Doug
sorry to take a while to join this thread... had some log in problems.

Sorry to thwart your record claim but your fish is NOT a rosey job. It is a small tooth jobbie and last time I checked the Aus record was either 5 or 8 kg taken by Greg Pickering.

    Nice fish nonetheless

    Re: Is this rosy?

Thanks mugil, I had that confirmed by shadow on the adrenaline site, he checked with some expert in a museum. Interested to know how many of these get caught on line around here. Simon trippe said he has seen them off the solitaries and out at marion. I have a feeling it was one unlucky fish! I wasn't concened about the record I just wanted to know what it was. Cheers Doug

    Doug

I’ve never caught one around Brisbane, got a couple at Marion and Frederick Reef.
Heard of the odd one around here, usually misidentified as a rosy (Rosy’s have a much smaller mouth, more like a snapper and are rarely found in less than 50m).
Tony Heugh speared a nice smalltooth at Hutchies fairly recently.

    Re: Is this rosy?

    hi all ?

what distinguishes a small toothed jobby from a Rosy? i looked up the Grant's again last nigth and the rosy picture sure does look like that one.

Info?? - they didn't have a picture of a small toothed jobby however.

    Thanks.

    Re: Is this rosy?

    Gday Rick

They do look similar, both jobfish after all. Basically the smalltooth has a bigger and more forked tail, bigger eye and most notably a bigger mouth.
I have a couple of reasonable pics from my website you could use to compare
