    Russell River Sooty Hunt

With the wind starting to blow in Cairns myself and Dan (Bad Bubby) went in pursuit of freshwater fish in the Russell River. The sun was out and the waters aren’t running very fast, though fish weren’t out of the question on small poppers.

Dan was first to success with a chunky Jungle Perch.

I had a couple of hookups that threw the hooks before landing a small Sooty

We both had Tarpon hit the lures, though none were landed with their bony mouths throwing hooks easily. It’s a bit of a trek to fish that sort of country, but it’s a bit of fun when the wind’s up

Yeah it was a bit of fun thats for sure, nice meeting you Steve. Those pics turned out pretty nicely, it was good to get that jp early on, pitty it was the only one of the day. I gotta say the highlight was stirring up those sooties on sundown .

P.S I think I left two very wet shoes in your backseat

Ive been right up the Russel, tracked about 1/2 hour from a turn off near the falls. Theres heaps of sooties up there but all small. Would have caught about 50 of em plus some nice jungle perch. I dont know how they get up there. They say they are a different variety than other sooties and dont grow all that big.

Theres some beautiful places up there.
