Mackay onshore, month of December thus far
The herring schools have made a small appearance at Grasstree Beach, along with them the Mackerel. Discussion at the boat ramp found that one boatie caught a nice Spotted Mackerel and a small Giant Trevally on a Raider. Another boatie caught Mackerel Tuna but was less inclined to give away is ammo. My fishing companion and I, however, landed a Spotted Mackerel using a plastic.
Hearsay, from the fella’s at the Sarina Inlet boat ramp, is that the Grunter are biting well, on pilchards, at the shoal (near the buoy) off Sarina Inlet and Spanish Mackerel were working the bait schools. Sharks were, however, a bit of a problem, taking some of the bigger fish caught.
Louis Creek saw us landing a Fingermark, at high tide, with live herring as bait. Mackerel are also in close, as bait fish were everywhere. That was until sharks came in and started knocking them up. My fishing companion had a shark strike on his light rod and line, played with him up and down the bank for close on an hour before pleas from me to ‘let him go, coz if that thing hits the bank I’m outta of here!’
Freshwater Point had an abundance of Potty Mullet schools and also Mackerel was working the bait schools. We, unfortunately, come up with a Long Tom from the shore.
Marian Creek saw us catching a King Threadfin and Bream on pilchards.
Harbour Wall consisted of a lot of bait schools, and once again, Mackerel were working the bait schools. The catch of a small Red Emperor and an even smaller Rock Cod couldn’t justify the amount of tackle lost. Even with the abundance of Mackerel activity, no fisherman, onshore or boat caught a Mackerel, whilst we were there, that day.
A disappointing December’s fishing. Not to mention, Mackerel session for us.
Murray Creek, Cape Palmerston and The Whitsundays, we haven’t been able to find the time to fish, as this is our busiest time of the year for us, work wise. We will however put work aside the moment a storm cracks (still no rain this month) so we can hit the Mangrove Jacks. In the meantime, we will continue to work on our Tinnie in time for our trip to Awoonga Dam in January.
Cheers
Juicy
No fish (apart from the bait) were killed or harmed in the making of this report, by either me or my fishing companion!!!!!!!!
