Gold Coast Landbased Trevally
Decided to sacrifice 2 hours sleep this morning for a quick flick at one of the Palm Beach lakes which holds Trevally. After my recent success on the popper I concentrated on top water action. Was on the bank at first light and there was very little action, possibly due to the light wind and mild temp? Cast at a few likely spots, and managed to hook one fish but the hooks pulled after 10-15 seconds. Gave that area a few more casts and had a few follows and strikes but no hook-ups.
Saw a bit of action on the far bank so hot footed it over there and one the second cast there was a big splash and the drag screamed. With light gear this fish had a couple of good runs including one run aimed at a nearby drain. Once it tired, the fish did the customary laying on its side and I could feel every tailbeat. Managed to land him after 90 seconds - measured 54cm. Was home by 6am - the time I normally get out of bed!

lovely fish there marty, i absolutely love trevally and fishing landbased it's great when you bump into a heap of em actively feeding, i've only been that lucky twice and had a great time casting plastics into the big bait school they were ravaging and hooking trevally, tailor, bream down on the bottom, its about as good as it gets i reckon...

Re: Gold Coast Landbased Trevally
nice fish sounds like a bit of fun. which lake was it 19th or laguna?

Re: Gold Coast Landbased Trevally
Yes - surface fishing is very exciting and I really enjoy it. Nothing like seeing swirls and boils all around your lure - gets the heart racing!
This was in Laguna Lake - I plan to give 19th Ave, Pine Lake and the lakes in the dog park a go this summer. Have heard "big fish" stories about all of them.

Nice morning outing marty, good size trev for landbased to. I went last night after work on the tweed fishing around the pontoons casting, dropped one Jack on a softie but it was pretty quiet for such good conditions.

Rod,
You must be getting withdrawal symptoms by now - it's been a week since you landed a Jack! Before work next week looks the goods - light winds early and hopefully hot morning temps. I think we are going to Coomera Monday morning - hopefully they will be biting a bit harder by then!

Scotty,
Haven't seen you since the Classic!
I have been using the same popper for the last couple of trips - a Yo-Zuri ZZ Pop - it is 70mm long.
Fishing before work is a great way to start the day - although I don't know how I would feel if I did it every day!

Re: Gold Coast Landbased Trevally
Well done marty. I went for an early fish too, great minds think alike. I reckon they werent biting as well as last weekend. Might be the low tide.
Saw lots of trevors in the river feeding on what looked like herring. They wouldnt take my rapala popper or several hard bodies, or my mate johanne's sps. Then we saw a 3 ft shark bust thru the boil and do arials in the middle of the river We both looked at each other with jaws dropped. Saw a jack take a few runs from under a mangrove but he resisted my lures >.
Might have to buy a yozuri popper, hmmm.
cheers

Re: Gold Coast Landbased Trevally
les,
I call them Big Eye Trevally (or Silver Trevally) - I'm sure if I am wrong someone will post the correct name. They sure are fun.
Andrew,
Great minds (or desperate anglers)?
Yep, they were definitely a bit docile today - even the mullet I saw jumping looked lethargic!
Nothing worse then seeing a Jack ignore your lures.
