Southport whiting trip 30/12/05
Brother and I head down to the coast as a last minute desicion late in the avro (6pm late). So the the rods in the car and a last minute dash to gems for blood worms 10 mins to spare before closing, talk about cutting it fine.
Then off we headed to the spit, to one our favorite whiting locations from the bank. The night was perfect slight breeze, warm and plenty of mossies that kept us entertained between fish. Things were slow as we only managed a couple good whitting. Then the "last cast routine" came into play so out went the cast. The current wasn't all that strong but noticeable, Then the line would go slack which was an indication that the there was an inquisition on the end, then the train booked tickets for the seaway entrance stretching the 3kg line to the max. There was no ZZZZZZZZ of the reel as it was an Alvey, and I had the ratchet off. The 6" BVRR reel that I got from Ausfish ( Like the Plug?) worked a treat and never faulted through out the ordeal. Finally the the fish was with in sight the displacement waves off the fish were the largest I have seen, for a whitting anyway. Then finally the fish was subdued and brought up the sandy beach. Subdued well maybe not as it trashed around until I got may hands round it. The power and bulk of these little missiles was evident as it slipped out of my clutches not once but three times. In hand lay a healthy 38cm specimen weight knows and who cares as it looked absolutely beautiful as it gleemed in the moonlight, well maybe then the high rise lights there was no moon. So excited about the capture, out went the other casts, to continue fishing and fish we did, as soon as the line hit the water they were on, first the "mooching"of the bait and then the orient express.
All in all it was a great night with only 27 good whiting being caught in a space of an hour and half with all being between 29cm and the biggest a 38 cm monster.
Its not the biggest whitting I have caught, that hounor goes a a bribie island fish that went 43cms nor the most in fact we left them on the bite, But what I think makes it special is going with someone you enjoy spending time with and the impromptu trips with all stars aligning, that make that moment special moments, and that's what brings us back time and time again.
All the best for the New Year to you all.
Cheers

The old one last cast routine huh
Sounds like you had some great fun on light line, whiting that size have a good bit of pulling power. The bonus is they taste damn good too

Straddie,
I sure did, I have done a lot of fishing from Deep sea to Bass fishing in the fresh even spent some time trout fishing in tassie when I was there last.
But out of all of them I would say fishing for bass and Estuary Fishing would have to my favorite types of fishing.
It amazes me with the amount of fishing pressure the broadwater cops, the fishing there would be the best whitting and flathead spot in the southeast. But that is my opion.
I'm interested in other areas that people would consider better?
Cheers
Ray.
