Jason if you a video camera in the spare hand you could have taken out Australias Funnist Home Video this year. Couldn't even start to imagine how it would have been in that position. Next time down there bring a catfish in and run it over with your car it will make you feel better and cut the spike first.

These have been my catfish rules ever since I got a spike in my thumb.

Sorry to hear your unfortunate experience Jason. A mate and I had a similar experience at Woodgate last year where we were backing the boat down the timber ramp that leads into the ocean. He hit the picks in the land cruiser to launch the boat off the trailer only to have to whole lot Land cruiser and all start sliding into the drink due to the slippery ramp. The only thing that stopped him was a huge wave that smashed into the back of the LC momentarily stopping the slide. With that my mate had it in gear and in 4wd and was spinning the wheels of which burnt off the slime and finally got traction and started inching forward meanwhile here was me trying not to get crushed but the boat that was surfing the wave and heading towards the LC. I managed to flick it to the side of the LC only to have it land sideways on the trailer scratching the new paint job. The next wave half filled the boat with water. Needless to say after that episode we didn't retrieve it from that ramp but from the river adjacent of which we should have launched from in the first place. We will never use that ramp again!!!!

    Jason ,
I believe that you should use heat, not cold, on any fish type spikeing, anyone confirm that please?

David, That is right, I have been done a few times by the dreaded Fortiscue castnetting from the bank at night with a torch. The only thing that slows the throbbing was the hot water i put my hand into when i got home. its not nice. I agree about not letting them into the boat though, there is a way to hold them with one hand close to the spines but on the body and i have retrived hooks that way when i have landed one on a lure that i WAS not going to cut off!! if i get one tonight i will take a pick of how i hold them.

Bad luck with that trip too mate, I didn't see this thread untill it came back to the top of the list, Your lucky that someone was there fishing!! Hope all is well now and your back on the water fishing

    Cheers
    Brandon.

I found that the ice immediately relieved the pain, and as the spike went in deep between the fingers. bleeding under the skin, and subsequent bruising would occur. Icing a bruised area helps to minimise swelling and I was hoping to be ale to at least numb it enough to be able to use it when i got to the ramp... Which I was able to do ! Though I think adrenaline rather than my medical skills was probably responsible!
I don't offer this as first aid advice in any way! It is a recounting of what I did at the time.. I can vouch though that the ice relieved the pain almost instantly, and when my hand was removed from the esky, i had a short period of time before the pain returned.! As I often have an esky handy, and the stove is always stowed, ice is far easier!

    Jason, Brandon,
I did some research, and all seagoing stingers, including stingrays, and stonefish, catfish, flathead. The treatment is hot water, for the best results, for pain treatment.
