Bream & Jacks 08-01-06
Fished the second and final round of the ABT Xmas Bream Classics this morning. 24 Teams started from the Spit ramp at 7.00am and we headed out into 30+ knots of wind and intermittent rain, the type of day you think to your self "I should have stayed in bed".
Anyway, Davud and I (Team Breamaholics) headed up Biggera Creek to try to get out of the wind. Things started off slowly with very little action. The first fish to the boat was a healthy 30cm Jack that smashed a 3" Gulp Fry in watermelon that I cast between a moored boat and its pontoon, luckily for me (only had 6lb Fireline and 6lb Vanish leader) it ran into the open and after some good runs it was boated, photographed and released.
We both boated some under-sized bream until our first legal was boated, No donut for the Breamaholics today . We continued up Biggera, basically casting to everything in range, rock walls, boats, bridges, jetties & pontoons, but thing were still very quiet. I cast under a nice jetty and not getting any response started to quickly retrieve back to the boat for another cast, about 5 metres from the boat my fry got hammered and what ever it was headed full steam back towards the jetty I had just cast to. I managed to turn its head and get back some line, it ran back to the jetty a couple of times but I managed to keep turning it back to the boat. For a while it ran deep, and I called it for a trevor, until that nice bronze colour showed and a 42cm Jack came to the surface, it too was netted, photographed and released. New PB Jack for me
As much fun as the Jacks were, it was bream we were after, but they were few and far between, we managed only one more legal fish, so only weighed 2/5 for the comp. Not sure where we finished, but it would have been way down the field, as some of the teams boated over 30 bream during the comp.
A few other Jacks were caught, Wazza bought back a 60cm specimen in his live well. He picked it up of the Seaway walls. Pretty good effort for 6lb.
Will have to have another Jack session during the week I think, no more of this light leader capers.
Cheers
John

Re: Bream & Jacks 08-01-06this morning,
2 Jacks on 6lb leader - I'll never hear the end of it now!
Maybe they were a bit lethargic with the cooler weather this morning? No matter what you say, I am sticking with 14lb
Well done - pity it was a Bream comp.
Looking forward to the next session later in the week!

Nice jacks JT. An excellent effort on 6lb leader!
Any idea where the bream are biting on the goldie? Am keen to have a crack at em later in the week....
That 60cm seaway jack is a cracker! Was it caught on 6lb leader? And what size jig head did the trick?

Marty - tell me about it, as much fun as the Jacks were, during the comp the first words out of my mouth when I saw what they were was "Argggg Sh$t, it's only a Jack". Mate, I'll still be sticking with 14lb Fireline and 20lb leaders for our mid-week sessions.
Cheers Shane - a lot of luck involved in getting them on 6lb.
1337 - A lot of bream caught today up the Nerang in the dead end canals on Ecogear SX-40's and small 2" grubs. Yes, the 60cm was caught on 6lb too, not sure about Jig head size but it looks like about 1/8oz. That plastic hanging out of its gob looks like a 3" Berkley Gulp Minnow in Pumpkinseed colour.
Cheers

Re: Bream & Jacks 08-01-06
Great report JT! Like u, i also caught a 40 cm jack on 6lb vanish in the kawana canals on a 3' watermelon droppie, and still dont know it didnt manage to get me in the snags. Shame about the weather, Jackash, Fritzy my bro and me fished the seaway last nite, ended up getting 3 very very nice big eye trevally on raiders, but apart from that worst conditions we've experienced for a long time. Wont say to much cause a report wil be put up with pics once i get the digi back from the cousins. Anyway, pity about the lack of bream, sure it would have been very hard going, but those jacks are very impressive. Well Done!

Bad luck on the Bream mate but you have to be happy with all the Jacks!! My biggest so far is 40cm. got it on 14lb leader only did 2 big runs for the rocks and luckly was hooked half way to the boat!
Anyways good luck with the trip out this week! I am going to give it a couple of goes this week after work, i got smashed up yesterday up the south pine with 14lb leader so will give it a go tonight with 20 if the weather lets me!!
cheers

Well done JT, your getting to be the expert on jacks mate. you deserve it after the hours your putting in on the water.
Wouldnt Runaway Bay canals hold more bream than Biggera Waters? The guys on AFT thought so. Might be something to do with the concrete walls. B Wtrs has more mud, and less food?
cheers

Hi JT,
Top stuff had to laugh "its only a jack" any other day you'd be tickled pink to have nailed him & on 6lb, well done. Would have been tough in those conditions yesterday shore was blowing.

Cheers Guys, when your fishing this light, there is so much luck involved, but when fishing for Jacks I'll take all the luck I can, cause nothing beats seeing that red fish come aboard.
Andrew, we tried the Runaway Bay canals like a lot of other boats and from all reports it was a bream wasteland in there. During the first round we pulled around a 2kg bag out of Biggera so we thought it was worth a try.
Brandon - good luck tonight, look forward to your report tomorrow of Jacks a plenty.
Hey Matty, Yeah I can't belive I said it either, still happy to boat them, just wish they were bream.
Cheers
