    Pop a Jack

Headed out down the gold coast this morning before first light on the continuing quest for a jack on popper. At first there was not a lot of surface action but as the light increased it started to fire up with trevally hitting the surface all around and the odd big surface hit hard up against the structure after a few casts to these, smack the lure disappears in a shower of white water and its on thumb locked on the spool to keep him from getting back home and praying for the hooks to hold. Thankfully they did and a 44cm jack made is way into the net, this fish was actually an olive green colour when landed but in the time I had got the camera ready it had turned to a deep red awesome to watch it just change colour that quickly. Finished the day with a few flatty and moses perch on plastics with all fish released to fight another day and off home ready to try again tomorrow.

    Cheers

    Matty,

Great to see you get one on a popper - there is nothing that puts a bigger smile on your face than seeing a Jack appear from the depths beside the boat! Don't they hit those poppers hard?

I hooked one last week but it was in around 2 feet of water - a spot I never suspected Jacks to be so I played it out as a Trevally. Got a real shock when the Jack appeared beside the boat - unfortunately the hooks pulled before the net slid under it. Now I know they are in this particular spot, JT and I will try for another in the same spot over the next few days.

Might see you out there - I think we are going for a dawn raid Wed morning (where we saw you last time)

Hey Matty, nice fish mate, fantastic colour. I am yet to get one on a popper, that's my next goal. We might see you on the water on Wednesday morning, be nice to start the day with a couple of mean red fish caught & released .

    Cheers

I have caught one that changed colour aswell.
It was silver like a grunter when first caught then changed to green through the photos.
Like the colour of that one.

Good work!! That is someting i am going to have to try b4 the weather cools down I want to get some Bream on them too! What sort of retrive do you use when fishing poppers for Jacks and Bream? is it just twitching and long pauses or do you work them a bit quicker than that?

The Jack i got last week was an olive colour with very vivid strips when it came to the surface, my mate actually thought it was some kind of freshwater Pearch at first but as soon as we got it in the boat and on the mesuring board he got darker and darker red until the strips disapeared!

    Cheers

JT, cheers mate see you there.

Brandon, I use a "walk the dog" retrieve so far it seems jacks hit as soon as you pause, whereas bream seem to like a really long pause.
