    Mud - Wed night

Managed to sneak out to Mud on Wednesday night for a spot of bait fishing. Fished the shallows on the south west side and only managed a few just keeper grassies. Was a bit lumpy with the northerlies and lost about a litre of blood to the resident mud island mozzies. Does anyone have a surefire repellant to try and repel them? I think they must actually like the taste of aeroguard and rid!! Never seen mozzies that can bite through two layers of clothing!!!
Anyway, we would have caught close to 50 undersize grassies and moses perch so we had a bit of fun. A few unstoppables plus a huge ray kept us on our toes.

Substitue the water for metho, and add a touch of pure citronella oil. Haven't tried it at Mud at night (it's fine by day), but have been ok at the Noosa everglades and Pine River mangroves.

    I swear by it!

    Good luck,

    Lager,

I have just brought a thing called a thermacell mossie replant and has a gas cartridge, which you turn on and it work's like the ones you pulg in to the power socket at home with the little blue mat's you slide in to them, we took it camping at christmas and it seemed to work , not sure if it would work at mud cause I have never fished there. you can buy these things from Bunnings or b.c.f if you want to check them out.

    cheers Chris
may you get a bend in your rod and your esky open often

    Re: Mud - Wed night

I have heard of using a mix of dettol, water and baby oil... It seems to work for those that told me about it, but I prefer my way based on careful research, strategy and sheer cunning!

    The Facts:
    - Over the last few hundred thousand years or so mozzies have developed a taste for the more common blood types... O type in particular!
    - Only pregnant female mosquitos feed on blood. Males and females that are not pregnant do NOT feed on blood.
    - My blood type makes up the smallest percent of population

    The Strategy
My "repellant" (substitute: "bait" or "sacrificial offering") is to take a friend or two with me, depending on the expected numbers of the enemy ( Mud Island in up to light winds is a 2 friend trip :-) )

    The Results:
    - Friends take the majority of hits even wearing rid or aerogard, I get maybe a half dozen for the night.
    - I often outfish those wearing repellant. (This in no way is a reflection of my skill, IMO repellants repel fish too!)

    The Catch:
-This method does not work whilst alone. Apparently any blood is good blood but O is better!

Remember to take a friend - safety in numbers! :-)

Good points Jason. I do appreciate your research, strategy and sheer cunning.
I did have someone else in the boat and he also was being mozzie mauled.
Not sure what blood type I have but I normally don't have too much of a problem with the little bitties. However the mozzies out at Mud are an exception as they seem to not care about what or who they are feasting on. I do like your idea of bringing out a few sacrificial friends and will definately be doing that next time.
Luckily the benefits of night fishing in the shallows at mud generalily exceeds the discomfort of putting up with the resident winged marauders.

Chris thanks for tip for the thermocell repellant. Will check it out.
