Headed back down the coast again this morning, didn't start off to flash turned the alarm off and slept in for an 1.5hrs >, madly rushed around getting ready and somehow managed to rember everything I needed . Warp speed down the highway so its no to light when I get there, put the boat in and off to my spot and someone's already there and there was no surface action anywhere (hey Andrew sorry I didn't come over & say hi was in a rush) so went to another spot that I usually fish a bit later and have only ever got bream there. After a couple of casts came up tight on a nice little bream, couple more casts and another bream chasing the popper actually got its head and shoulders out of the water but failed to hook up another bloop and bang, I'm thinking geez that bream hit hard as the "bream" takes off under the jetty, some quick finger work (gotta love the new copilot on the leccy) and had a better angle but still having trouble and starting to think this is no bream managed to get him out and boated this nice jack of 490mm. A couple of pontoons later had another hit as I was bringing the popper out from behind a pylon it drifted behind saw a red flash he ran back around the pylon and it was all over. Was a bit concerned as the fish probably had a good few meters of leader & braid attached to the lure, all was good though retied and as I cast back out the first lure line and all floats to the surface meters from the boat .
Marty, yeah mate I slept in the other morning that I got one to could be a pattern developing . No not PB best is 55cm on a renosky a couple of years ago got it where I ended up yesterday It was the only jack I've ever kept, only kept him cause the lure was in his stomach, had the frame in the freezer for months .
fantastic jack matty. which creek/river were you in? mate how deep was the water you were casting the popper in? i'm yet to get a jack on a popper, as i'm unsure what depth they work best in to entice a strike. also, what sorta popper would you suggest? great result mate, well done.
cuzza, just in the broadwater any poppa should do the job just make sure it has strong hooks, wire & split rings. no specifc depth just throw into places that make you think "if i get a hit I'm in trouble" .
Blimey!! I can't belive how many Jacks you guys are getting down there! Great Work!! I think i am going to tie on the popper next time i hit the water and see what happens! I have been trying to get some Jacks in the Pine river and have managed one so far that was of size (40cm). got it on a plastic but can't wait to see how they hit a surface lure!
I think i am going to have to make a trip down the broadwater soon!! where do you launch? I don't want to know your secret spots just where is the best place to launch close to some good areas as i have never been on the water down there!!
Well done mate, i also had a later start this morning and still got amongst them. Maybe we should make it a regular plan Went against my better judgement and threw a light spin rod in amongst the pontoons exit one minnow >
They are really good to get on surface mate congrats
Top fish Matt, makes up for Wednesday morning I'll bet. Jack on popper is my next goal. Good luck tomorrow, be interesting to see how you and Marty go, Battle of the Poppers is on.
Rod - Happy Birthday mate, must be a disease us Capricorns (my B'day today) have, throwing light gear into nasty Jack country
With all these Jacks being caught, maybe there should be a Social Ausfish Jack comp soon, I'll be there.
