Morning At the SandHills 26/1/06

Ater having a late night doing a called out not much sleep I put in at the Shallow Wello at 3:30 am conditions resonable
Then decided to head over to Moreton Island Again near the Sandhills
I threw out the crab pots same place again and come up trumps again there ( see my last report where I got them) Gave some the crabs to my neighours,
Chase the whiting at the sandhills the Grinners where thick in numbers
I caught just as many as them as whiting
Turn out to be a good morning
Great trip back riding over Eastly wind swell all the way back to Wellington Point back at lunch time

Is it normal to get diver whiting in morton this time or year?

Yes - you get winteries (diver whiting) all year at the sandhills, and the quality is always good compared to what you get in the western bay during winter. Sometimes they are real horses (up to 30cm), but grinners can be a problem and it's not unusual in summer time to have mackerel cut them in half on the way up.

Next time I used a floater rig out with pilly or mullet on it might come with a mackeral that be good
Because had few rigs gone complelty cut off when i was fishing there

A couple of tips for fishing the sandhills. When I go over there in the summer time I always drift through the anchorage until I find a school of winteries, then anchor up. The first winterie then goes out rigged as a live bait under a float in case there are mackerel about. This can cause some excitement because this bait is also often taken by sharks which are sometimes in plague proportions. Another trick is to hang a squid jig under the boat while you fish. You'll pick up both squid and cuttlefish at this location
