with the full moon and great weather we've been having decided to fire up a few of the boys and have a shot at some jewies. Haven't targetted them for a few years but thought it was time to have another crack.
First trip saturday we headed out to my favourite spot X late afternoon and collected some livies. Right on dusk rods went out and the wait was on. Well, we didn't have to wait long as within 15mins my brand spankin' new big baitrunner LC let out a growl signalling a jewie was mouthing the tasty morsel on the end of my line. I gave him plenty of time to swallow the bait, wound the slack up and struck. my 12' rod doubled over as the fish motored off with a couple of big headshakes. This fish felt big, plenty of weight and no troubles in taking some decent drag. Unfortunately hooks pulled during that first run, upon winding in I found I still had my livie on, although he was now a deadie missing alot of scales and quite a few mouth marks on it. Figured I'd better upsize the hooks to get a better hookup so went to re-rig. The rest of the session resulted in 3 more good runs, but all baits being mouthed and dropped before we could sink the hooks. Called it quits at half ten with the jewies-4 us-nil
headed out again last night, again baits out on dusk and again I didn't have to wait long. Buried the hooks and at first I thought I'd missed as there didn't feel to be any weight. But thankfully I was mistaken as the rod doubled over and the fish made tracks for the deep. First run was powerful, headshakes were massive and this was certainly the biggest jewie I had hooked. It went deep, then arced over to some rocks and then back out to sea, all the while continuing to strip line. First run lasted well over 5 mins and it took about 100m of line! I slugged it out in the deeper water for a while and then with no warning my line went limp. I'd blown it. somewhere out there was a massive jewie wearing some nice red gamakatsu lip piercings. Wound my line in and saw that my 50lb leader had been worn away, probably by the fishes mouth or gill rakers. Re-rigged with 70lb flouro this time, lobbed out another livie and didn't get another touch! oh well, that's jewie fishing my mate said. called it quits at 9pm knowing it may be some time before I tangle with something that big.....well at least a month anyway as I'm hooked now and will be out there again next full moon phase! Final result for the weekend was jewies-5 us-nil but we felt we had some success as the fish were there for the taking and I had just underestimated the size and power of them.
