    Using soft plastics

I fished the mouth of Brisbane river last night for little joy. Some monster stingrays and catfish. I have just started throwing a few soft plastics around and have had very little success. Thought they were rubbish to be honest. However for a period of about half an hour, on the run out, I was getting a strike every secon or third cast, while the bait was sitting not being touched. The only fish I caught on the plastic sat there for a while as I landed a nice grunter on bait. Once the grunter was in the boat I brought in what I think was a reasonable moses perch only to lose it at the side of the boat. One other enormous hit took off but I had the drag set to light and didn't hook up.

Anyway, had loads of fun and are starting to find a bit more belief in soft plastics. However, if anyone has any tips to avoid getting loads of strikes but not catching them, I would love to hear. I was using Berkley Gulp 4" swimming mullet (pumpkinseed) with 1/6 1/OH jigheads. Were the plastics too big, or the hoks too small perhaps?????

Hi Steve0, Try using 1/8th jigheads with 2/0 heavy wire hooks.............10lb braid with 8 0r 12 lb leader............ set your drag to 1/3rd breaking strain of main line.
Plastic size sounds good to me.

the only way i really started catching fish on plastics is when i left the bait at home and just persisted with the plastics. it took me about 4 weeks to get my first fish but then it was like when you learn to ride a bike - all of a sudden the technique just 'clicks'. from then on (about 12 months ago) i use plastics 99% of the time. you are getting the bites so you are nearly there!

    Thanks guys,

I suppose one of the issues is spending enough money so as to have a variety of different sized jigheads and plastics and also a variety of colours, so when your out you can change things a bit to see what works best. I'll have to buy a few each week to pacify the finance minister.

Steveo, I was also like yourself 12months ago...Could get hits but never catch anything.Very frustrating!!
Ive found slowing down the strike to work best. Give them a few seconds to really get it inside there mouth and than strike. Once i got the timing down pat i rarely miss anymore. I fish SP's 99% of the time they nearly always out fish my mates using baits. As mentioned above once you get the nack of it youll never look back and you will catch more fish than you ever thought possible.

Sp size and hook size sounds OK.

The thing that helped me the most was keeping a range of jighead wieghts. Change them often to suit the current. Cast upstream and let the current move it back to the boat. Use a light rod and line and try to feel the bump, bump when you move them back towards the boat. Use the minimum you need to keep touch with the botom.

    cheers
