Hi all, woke up yesterday morning and saw how good the weather was I thought what the heck, I am going fishing finally after all the crap weather lately. Ran the bait net and got some Hardy heads and dug some yabbies. Fished for awhile between North and South Straddie in about 3m of water for a few whiting around 26cm and then tried closer to North straddie out from Swan bay in about 7-8m of water. Caught a couple of bream 26 and 27cm then got hit by something big on a hardy head. Fought it few for 5 min or so, alot of give and take with the drag. Feltt a bit like a stingray to me and the snap! al over. When I wound up my line was bitten off about 2 inches from the swivel and I had about 80cm of trace. Stingray? I will never know. Put on 20lb trace and bang on again. Same result but this time above the swivel. Whole lot gone. Anyway it was a nice day on the water but once it was dark the mossies were thick and heavy so time to go home. Sorry no pics of fish as they werent anything special. Cheers

The deep water out from Swan Bay sure can hold some good fish - I too have chased something big in that spot for 5 mins before it straightened the hook.

But I know of GT, Mack Tuna, huge Flatties, and Jewies all caught there - I'm sure that is just a small section of what gets caught there on a regular basis. Don't be so sure it was a ray...although that would probably make you feel a little better

Like Marty said some big fish get along there at times so don't be too quick to write soemthing off as a ray. My guess with the bite offs is you are using nice shiney swivels and a tailor has decided he wanted to try and taste them. Try using black and you shouldn't run into that problem again.

I must say that i have been hit severly there too at times! One morning a few months back, got 4 big hook-ups in 40mins. all i can say is that a lot of line was taken with very little coming back to my reel! twice for more than 10 mins before 'twang', lost the lot and twice for 5-10mins only to get my gang hooks back! It was great fun and would have loved to have landed at least 1 of the suckers but certainly inspirational for a repeat trip. A few 'local's' stated that they were probably trevally as they had been moving through there - i know one thing for sure and that was that they weren't rays! Maybe one day soon one of us can nail one and post a pic for all to see?!

I have fished that area a bit a bulled a couple of school jew and lost many others. It is very rough country there along the edge of the coffee rock, and my bet is you were rubbed off on the bottom. Very unlikely that a fish has swallowed 80 cm of your trace.

Thanks for your feedback guys! I to doubt it was a ray ( you usually get them up to the boat or see them at least) Whatever it was seemed to sit still every now and then until I tried to gain some line on it, then it would run. Anyway like you say hopefully one of us will land one and post his pic

after hearing those stories im already planning my next trip there!!! cant wait till those swan bay jew get going again along with the tailor. Can someone tell me when it will be worthwile fishing for them? Or for anyother species other than bream n whiting? Would love to get hooked up with a trev or mack!

Bo_D, anytime early morning or at night - especially Jewies, they seem more active at night around the new moon period. that's what i have found but others may have differing views...

grant my thought is maybe sharks , theyll easily take majority of ur trace down if given enough time with the bait, it seems a little cool for sharks to be prolific but last weekend i had the same thing while fishin for jew kept coming back with fraid line and no hooks. typical shark behaviour.
