Thursday was a mongrel of a day weatherwise, the canopy kept us dry but I reckon it was a bit cool for the barra. A late afternoon 45cm jack being the only saving grace. Lots of good size mullet everywhere up to 14in long. Dropped two barra also before stumps was called.
Friday dawned much brighter so we hit the water with a new game plan and some renewed confidence. We decided to fish the mouth with the wind having dropped. We loaded up with new livies and hit a few spots along the southern bank. The runout was pretty quiet with only one barra hooked and subsequently busted off. The run in tide looked to br running late till we realised the water level in the creek was rising but the fresh was still running out on top. Two hours after the turn, the barra started to fire up.We hooked and lost or dropped half a dozen fish in the snaggy area and were getting sick of rerigging. I had to leave by four o'clock so I was stoked to land a 66cm model, on our last livie, at ten to four.
The rest of our crew did well on the crabs with not a single jenny caught over the two days.
you can hire them, hes got a web site. mudhutadventures.com or something.
i have a holiday shack there, and used to fish of the main beach there as a kid. never fished the haughton itself though, but according to a local there i know and work with, he says its not what it used to be. ever since et did a barra show on the place a few years back, it got slammed pretty hard and the pros drag off the front and have ruined all the sea beds that were once there.
