Headed out to mud island for my fifth time yesterday- armed with a good supply of freshly caught squid, some WA pilchards, an assortment of lures and a good chart. On board was a good mate of mine from down the coast who was keen for an outing after hearing about the snapper i caught on only my second trip.
We headed over the western side of mud and were anchored up current from a small patch of reef by sunrise. First drop both our baits were hit with tiny bites for no hook ups. We decided to move three times and still couldn't get a scale in the boat. After some three hours we decided to drift. The 15-20kn wind was pushing us against the current so our lightly weighted baits were lifted up towards the surface. Within 50m of drifting my large squid head got absolutely smashed- reel screaming and rod doubled over. After a long 15 minutes we finally got a look at it some 30m from the boat before it dove again and tore line from the reel with ease. It was dark in colour, estimated at 1.2metres and called for a shark or a cobia. The bloody thing just wouldn't tire and i struggled to get it close to the boat... so i tightened the drag up and did my best to bully it in. My good mate andy picked up my small net and laughed, before going for the gaff. The end result... plenty of yahoos and a solid longtail tuna.
We did a bit of exploring after that and trolled some shallow running lures before returning to the reefy area and anchoring for a legal squire and a couple of undersized sweetlip, squire, tailor and mackerel.
