John West would be proud -Tuna

Well with a forcast of 10 -15 knots we hit the water after reports that the spanish mackeral hd arrived. We planned on heading 40km north up to Abbot Point Jetty to chase a few spanish but when we got about 5 km out we were suddenly surrounded in schools of churning tuna.

With two new Okuma Epix 80s on board we decided to stretch our arms for a while. First cast saw 80yards of braid peel off the reel as the tuna exploded off into the blue. Meanwhile my new neighbour who had never been fishing who decided to come along before couldnt belive his eyes.

Almost to the mono backing I decided to begin a fight back and after about 10 minutes a nice longtail of about 13kg hit the boat whilst my oither mate made progress on another over the 10kg mark which was a good effort on 10lb braid (I was using 40lb). We were all cursing because we had forgotten the soy sauce.

Handed the rod over to the nebie and in a fe mintes he was onto a frieght train which really gave some stick. In the end a nice longtail toabout 8kg was also landed.

This action lasted for about 2 hours as we chased them all over the place. We ate some longtail for lunch afer we found a bit of finegar and even tried for a few trout when we decided to give th e arms some rest. Half hour later we got bored and decided to get back into the tuna again. This time nice fat mac tuna deccided to play and in a two hour session we landed over 20 fih all about 5 to 6 kg with some 10kg horses amonsgt them.

Was very happy with the Okuma reel and the pick lure of the day was the 25g bumper bar in silver. Had to change the trebles three times in a day. Overall kept 4 mack tuna for crab pot bait and spanish mackeral bait (love those big strip oily baits) and one longtail, with a bit for dinner frsh sushi style and the rest going to a mate of mine with a japanese wife, she loves the stuff.

Anyway didnt catch a mackeral but didnt care great days fishing.

The longtail above was almost the smallest of the day, I prefer them smaller I reckon they taste better than the big horse fish

Funniest part of the day was when mate caught a nice longtail and as we were releasing it a huge queeniy tried to take the lure out of its mouth for a second we had two fish on one bumper bar, scared the crap out of us
