    Deception Bay 29th late report

Finally put all stuff together to post my report sorry for delay...

    Here you ready to read;
Last Saturday morning presented beautiful sunrise reflects the clouds turned orange holds for few minutes and took digital camera to shoot the pic for your & mine pleasure.
I and mate Joe pushed his small tinny boat into water and our elder child raced to us and told us to wait. They wanted join us fishing and we say Ok, hop on tinny. We cruised on almost glassy water and arrive Deception Bay our ‘X’ spot.
But someone already on our ‘X’ spot and saw bloke on fibreglass boat had his bend fishing rod and landed nice spottie.
We quickly rig our fishing line, first strike went to my son Leo scream “got big fish” then I chuckle and tell him “fight” he was fighting and saying “Come, Come, Come” Landed his first spottie he as so excited but I found out spottie was 58cm and told him “Sorry mate have to let it back water” he understood and accepted.
So far we fished for morning session we caught about dozen of spotties and released into water most measures came out 45 to 58cm. I was pleased to know there are plenty of them in Moreton Bay to breed and grow for our future children to catch them one day.
I forget mentioned I tried out slugs with my high spinning reel and on 2nd cast and strike my first waston tuna (thanks to chief’s post last week I learnt new specie)
Few cast later and got solid strike few minutes later unknown fish unhooked and won the battle. Again more cast then got small spottie on slug and released back water.

    Happy fishing

Great photo's Dave. Good to see you and the young fella out enjoying what life has to offer. Many more mac's to catch i thnk.

They look like doggie mac's but I'm not certain. The northern end of the bay seems to be full of them at the moment. That could be why they were all around the 48-60cm mark. Maybe someone else could confirm.

Good work mate!! They are great fun to catch I think they are schoolies (doggies) too. the first pic shows a clear spot on his top fin, your son's life jacket is showing through it. this is a tell tail sign that its a schoolie and not a spottie. the second pic is a little harder to tell as his fins are sitting a bit lower. anyways congrats again and hope you get into them again!!

Ps: Schoolies have a size limit of 50cms so it probablly could have come home for the barbie, but its great to see people doing what they think is the right thing go to the DPI website and study the diferences of the species so you can be sure next time or get yourself a copy of Grants guide to fish. they have pictures of 99% of the fish you will ever catch in Australia! when i was younger and not fishing i use to read every description for every fish and i think that has helped me greatly in identifing fish. I have also printed out the latestes DPI rules and regulations for fishing and carry this with me every time just in case i catch something out of the usual that i need to check on. I have the PDF file (of rules and regs) if you like PM me your email and i will send it to you

    Cheers
    Brandon...

I agree with the others - school mackerel. Anyway, sounds like a fun trip and great stuff when the kids get a few.

Gee... I always thought it was spotties, many years ago I used live in Townsville and caught many doggies out there and could tell different between spottie & school (school has much shiny and few big spots) in my case I could see all mackeral we caught has lots of fade spots I was doubt those are juvenile spotties... you made me confusing...
That’s why JustOneMore raised question in his tread (above) because I and he were debating about correct identify... Now I have to look harder on them so I won't make myself big mistake next mackeral fishing...

BrandonH - Yesterday I downloaded DPI information on school and spotties and strange things are that school grows to 130cm (7.7kg) and spottie 104cm (10.2kg)

I gave up and could anyone present the photography both at approx 55cm to clarity
