Schultz Canal Sun Morning
Went out to Schultz Canal early sunday morning with my younger brother for a bit of a fish and also in the hope of picking up a few crabs. Arrived at the boatramp to see no less than 20 boats all cast netting around the same area for prawns. There must be a few around as one of the locals there told me it had been like this for at least the last week!
Anyway after waiting for about 5-6 boats to get away in front of me and then having to "find" a park for the car as it was a full car park out there, we got on the water, got the pots in and had a fish.
We didn't find it difficult to get into a few smaller whiting but did find it hard to get onto any with particular size about them. Ended up with 3 legal size ones after about 1 hour's fishing, we then decided to try down the little creek right at the mouth of the canal, we found that this was a good move and managed to get onto a good patch of bream (23-28cm) we bucketed about 3-4 legal ones there also. We did find it hard to get onto any crabs at all...... we had 5 pots out all morning and only ended up with 3 crabs total 1 legal sandie, one undersizse and 1 undersize buck muddie. This was very dissapointing as i had been out to this exact spot not more that 6 weeks prior and had no problems finding crabs there.
Anyway apart from the lack of crabs it was a great morning!!

Looks like you'll have to get a cast net
It's no surprise about the crabs, it's cooled off a lot in the last 6 weeks.
Keep throwing the pots out though, it'll keep the little crabs off your bait and you might catch something decent in them.

Truck sound like you had a good day anyhow.
Bad news for you though the whiting around at the moment are Winter Whiting they have no size or bag limit although theres not much meat on them under 20 cm. Easiest way to I.D. is Winter Whiting get dark spots on them and there top fin (I think thats the Dorsal correct me if i'm wrong) is round.
Anyhow found this (attached) see drawing bottom of page 36.

Ads,
That's ok, All fish were releaseed anyway except for the Crab, which was why I was a bit dissapointed by the lack of crab numbers.

Here is a picture of a trumpeter or winter whiting note that there are no golden fins as somebody showed me a bag of undersize sand whiting a couple weekends ago saying there are a few winter whiting about they were quite rude when I pointed out that these were sand whiting and they were breaking the law by taking them.

Nice pic Dobie you can easily see the dark spots and rounded top fin, you don't have a pic of a summery there?

just because we are coming into winter it doesnt mean all whiting will now be winter whiting, you still get the odd summery mixed in so it pays to be wary when putting together a feed. if you are unsure have a measure to be safe. i normally ID via the blotches, i think you can tell them apart too by the roughness of the scales, but i cant remember whos rough and whos not, maybe someone on here can confirm for me... thanks

Truck - That area you were in is Kedron Brook Floodway. Schultz Canal is upstream a bit...
I've caught some good flathead in the Kedron Brook by drifting along the bank on the opposite side to the boat ramp with SP's. I've also caught some good bream from in Jacksons Creek (That's the creek at the mouth you went in). There's a big hole jsut inside the mouth of it, and it drops about 2m or so... Lots of undersize bream in between the bigguns, but they are there... If you follow that creek it winds its way to the airport. LOTS of bream structure as you go along...
You should be able to get heaps of whiting just out the mouth of the Kedron Brook, and on the sandbanks on the southern side just inside the mouth. Just be wary as it gets pretty shallow in there!!!
