    Tailor Today - Teewah

Had my first serious spin for tailor for a few weeks today in the gutters between Teewah and the river mouth. There are some good formations with the occasional rock and plenty of whitewater from a 1m groundswell.
Went down this morning at about 10 o'clock and spun the length of a gutter before striking a nice fish at the very far end of it. Was in the 2 - 2.5kg bracket and was released. Was the only fish from a lot of casting for the morning. Decided to try again with the late afternoon incoming tide and again cast my arm off for 3 tailor around the 2kg mark. The first of which I kept (photos) and measured 60cm and had a very immature roe.
Will give it another go in the morning to see if first light is any better.

A close up of how the back to back hooks can 'lock in' on the jaw of the fish.

Sounds like it was tough going, but at least you got a few. Great photos of the fish and the way the hooks can "lock in"

Nice pics of the hooks set! Pitty there was few fish, the one you kept though do you smoke them?

    Cheers

I do like them smoked and we occasionally do a batch but it's not a regular. Much prefer them very fresh on the pan. Hardly keep any fish as I would prefer to release the tailor especially when their migrating north and just keep the odd one or 2 for friends.

Nice fish around the 2kg mark. I'm itching to get out again soon. How are those B#$%y netters going.

Neil, I haven't seen them with boats on for weeks. Only driving around the southern end looking for mullet. Certainly no shots for 3 weeks+.
Some quite good reports from over the weekend with a couple of 2 - 3lb bream and 40cm whiting with flathead and dart one catch I saw. Tailor are being caught but only in 1's and 2's. The waves which are standing up nicely and are crystal clear, don't have any fish in them and that's not as it should be.
Smailesy, it's not something I hate doing when you know that there is the potential of decent fish.

    Hey Slider,
Do you have much trouble releasisng the hooks when they are locked in like that , would imagine that would do a lot of damage to the fish ....???
Have placed an order with Ken & in about a fortnight I'll have a "Slider special" of my own ; hey that's kind of catchy you could probably market that name "Slider Special" hope I can get the same performance .......... Mal

    Mal

Have less problems with getting hooks out for release with the back to back set up than I do with trebles. Can grip the larger single hooks and get the leverage to take them out the path they went in. Trebles seem to do a fair bit of damage especially to choppers.
Pleased to hear you found something you like from Ken and I'd be interested as to how it goes Mal. Slider Special hey. Has a ring to it.
