60 cm is a solid tailor, what did you get it on? We had a nice session yesterday using poppers which was a heap of fun just choppers though (35-45cm). It's still great fun watching them smash your popper off the surface even if it has a lousy hook up rate.

    A great effort mate.

I went to Mud at around 5.30am for a couple of hours and fished specifically for tailor to take as bait on the Bay Bash later that day and caught zilch. The seas were also a bit lumpy at that time of day.

    You did very well.

    Best wishes....

Is Mud Island safe in a 12 foot tinnie with 15 hp motor?
If not what sort of rig (*minimum size) would I need to do it safely

Never been but keen to go...

    Re: mud tailor

It would want to be flat as a tack to take a 4mt 15hp out to Mud.
Looks closer than it is when you head for it out of the river.

I am sure that I see boats like that out there from time to time but I would not want to do it in one unless the day is super calm. There have been a few times when I have wished that my 4.75m 60hp boat was a bit bigger but that is when it hits about 20knots.

On a very calm day, no problems - but it can whip up quickly at Mud as it is very exposed to a wide area of sea and a wind change of any sort will make it lumpy and it can become very lumpy very quickly.

Mud has lots of little areas where you could shelter from heavy conditions but the challenge will be getting home across open waters. I think that the answer depends on how high the sides of your boat are.

The benefit of a small boat of course is that you could get into some spots at high tide where no one else could go.

    Re: mud tailor

Mate you can take any boat any where if the weather is good but it is what you do if the weather picks up. I don't think 15hp is enough to get you home quickly. With a bigger motor I would go to mud in a 4m
It's all part of the fishing experience

we've taken my mates little 3.85 with a 25 over.. but only when the weather plays ball, its not too far back to shelter in the river if the weather looks like it might turn nasty
