currumbin 27-6-06
took my tinnie out on currumbin creek this morning, the plan was to work from the mouth back with the incoming tide and work the bridges when it changed. simonpp and i got on the water at 6 and headed for the mouth. we found some holes with bait on the sounder and set up a drift. which worked well because the wind slowly pushed us agianst the tide.
we quickly got casting with flick baits and softies, and got hits straight up after a few small and average gts, 2 enourmous pike (looked more like barracuda) and talior (which kept sniping us of with the light leader). we finally got what we were after some fat bream around 28-30cms.
after wards we headed to the bridges for bream (best going 32cms), simon also got stiched up by a solid gt which we saw smash his plastic.
next we headed up the canals and boated some more small bream but the wind made it quite hard to drift around (if i had a dolllar for everytime one of us said if only we had an electric i probably could buy one).
i included some pics

marty,
the login name belonged to a friend, and i was just logging on with it, then he stopped using it. i had used it so many times i just kept going with it.
fish boy,
41 cm thats huge, did you get it on lure or bait, congrats! the name of the plastic we were using is called softies they are like those snapback plastic and are nearly indestructible (you can use 1 for like a month), they were 3 inch in a peach like colour and have little feelers on the side which makes them glide through the water, simon got them from the sunny coast somewhere.

Re: currumbin 27-6-06
Hi there,
Looks like you had a productive time!!
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I love fishing - but have not done a lot of it due to young family and living in Toowoomba...anyway, will be at Currumbin next week for the week. I was thinking of fishing in the creek - possible after whiting...but would be happy with whatever I caught.
I had a couple of ideas to try (from reading magazines), one was to try and catch some soldier crabs (I noticed some holes last time I was there) and attempt to tempt some whiting on high tides (which next week appear to moving from middle pm to late pm before sundown). Another idea was to try some surface poppers for whiting or whatever else was tempted - again after reading another article...then again I may just end up using worms or prawns.
I was considering fishing on the run in tide up to high tide...
I don't have a boat, so am limited to fishing from the shore...which leads to my question...can you advise me of some areas from the shore that may be suitable? Last time I was there, I noticed some sand banks that may have been in casting distance from the shore - at the western end of the inlet (northern shore), but I notice people swim there a lot, so am not sure if it is worth it? Is it worth trying for bream around the pylons under the Gold Coast Hway bridge, casting from the rocky shore? Do you have any other suggestions (though you may be wanting to keep them secret
Another question...do you think it would be worth bring surf rod and working the beach or even off the rocks at the mouth?
Sorry to have all these questions - I don't get out to test ideas much
Thanks
John

Re: currumbin 27-6-06
john,
in answer to your last question about the surf rod, i have heard there are a lot of talior out on the beaches, particularly off the alley rocks, whole pilchards and small spinners have been doing the dammage.
also i have seen people using soldier crabs for bait and doing very well with them. not sure how they presented them (eg, peeled etc). there is a big sand bank on the southern side of the creek (just towards the mouth of the first highway bridge, next to a netted off swimming hole), where there are heaps of soldier crabs.
i think the run in tide is ideal, but others think differently, there are heaps of land based spots as the creek is not that wide. under the bridges is a popular spot, also the sand banks near the mouth are good (particularly for whiting), just walk around and look for a bit deeper water where there is tide moving.
hope this is helpful, ive only just started fishing the creek in the last year so still putting the pieces together

Re: currumbin 27-6-06
jcw,
greg is the man for fishing currumbin creek , but you could also drop into The Boatshed and get some advice from Smithy. he has heaps of frozen bait and live beach worms and can give you plenty of tips on where to fish in the local area. you can find him on the southern side of the creek, just at the end of Throwers Drive bridge (the second one upstream from the mouth). he is a top bloke and always willing to share some tips.
