Decided to try around caloundra last night with the plastics. Started off at the boardwalk/Bulcock beach area at about 7:30. Plenty of water moving through and some fellas were catching a few mullet in cast nets. After about 45 minutes I started getting a few taps but no hook ups fishing the plastic a little closer to the top of the water. Switched to a smaller model and hooked a nice size pike, about 40cm long. Stayed another half hour at the most before I moved down to the jetty with the three white lights near Landsborough Pde. Plenty of baitfish round and about 20-30m North of the jetty there were a few splashes going on in the shallow water. Moved up that way and had two nice takes but couldn't hook up either time. By about 10 I'd switched locations again and was under the bridge near the military jetty. There were plenty of gar and mullet swimming under the jetty and getting spooked regularly by something bigger below. I spent about 30 minutes throwing plastics and poppers out there hoping to find out what it might have been (probably would have been very lucky to bring it in on the 4lb gear I was using) but no hook ups. Whatever it was seemed to enjoy rounding up the mullet close to the wall on the opposite side of the bridge, any ideas on species or tactics for next time??? By that point I'd had enough, came home and watched Federer beat Nadal and saw the first half of the soccer before the eyes gave in.
