Me and dad set off for his spot x on the pine but because it was a nice day he decided to have a go at scartborough reef.
We had never been there before and it was a bit eerie seeing the bommies rising up to you on the sounder. we went very carefully and dad said that we should stay there till low water so that we could get an idea of where the reefs were to make future trips safer.
We got a show of fish and I dropped the anchor and then asked dad for some bait. he said, "not today mate, we're crossing to the dark side". I had seen 'the dark side' mentioned in posts on ausfish and knew that it meant something to do with plastics. he hadn't brought any bait and he told me that my choice was 3 or 4" watermelon gulps and we both chose 3".
Straight away dad was into a bream that went 30cm and we thought it was gonna be a good session but all we could catch was small pike. As the tide dropped we moved to other patches of reef but there was no fish on the sounder. dad said that we should just be happy with being around structure and we should hope that the fish would move in with the tide. We moved a few more times and I got a flatty going 40cms and the rest of the day was spent hooking pike but some of them were stonkers.
Then dad saw 3 guys in trouble as they were paddling their boat and it was drifting onto the reef. I pulled up the anchor and we went to help them. They were in a 17fft glass cabin boat and dad didn't know if the little tinny would pull it but it did and we took them back to the ramp north of scarborough. We lost about an hours fishing but that was ok as the guys really needed help.
We then motored back out and drifted back to the Pine and had some good takes on 4" watermelons but missed them and I got busted up inside the pine but i think it was a big shovelly as it moved very slowly around the boat and then dug itself in to the sand.
I think we'll do more fishing with plastics in future
Good report jay jay. Those pike will make top bait there mate. Should of hooked one up and through him out the back. Also top effort for helping the other boatie out and getting him back to the ramp there needs to be more fisherman like you blokes.
top effort Lifestyle
