Spent the day out from Marroon in the sandy straights yesterday working the gutters from half tide out and a little of the up. Caught a good feed of whiting and flathead, bream, sole, and a 1kg squid. The squid was unexpcted and there was a mad rush to rig a lure before they swam past, those pink prawn lures do the job, just one cast and this one literally attacked the lure, anyway by the time we let him get rid of the ink, the others in the school had gone to far past to get any more. The whiting were patchy, getting a few and then have to move and find then again. The largest went 36 cm. The flathead were everywhere. The two largest had to be landed in the net at the same time as neither of us wanted to wait while one was taken out, in total we would have landed about 20 flaties for the day. We were in about 8 ft of water and could see the bottom when the two largest bit and with both of us fishing off the back corners of the boat and for a while we did not know who had which fish even though we could see every move they were making, and then we saw a third one even bigger lift up and swim off as we drifted down the gutter, anyway we know there a few still out there for another day. Bob.
