Took my wife for her first trip out in the boat today. It is only her 3rd time in a boat ever. We went out to the cockle banks after some whiting. What a beautiful day it was. We got to the Scarborough boat ramp about 8am and headed out past some very gorgeous boats. After picking our spot we drifted around and picked up only a couple of bites, it was a very slow day. Headed a little further out and closer to Bribie. It was such a good day out I didnt really care if we didnt catch anything, was just happy to be out and about. My wife scored first with a baby flattie, then I think the same one was still hungry so it jumped onto my line. I had my heavy line out hoping that something would take it for a big run but, no, the only thing that played with it where the crabs. I couldnt even get them up to the boat. All in all we had a great day and my new deckie did very well for her first time in the boat. I think she may have even out fished me but at least with the wife she doesnt rub it in. We ended up with 13 very big winters, I would say almost summer whiting size. With any luck we will go out again on Wednesday and drift around Woody Point.
nice feed of whiting...did the new deckie cook the fish and clean the boat??
I know when I take "my" deckie its the captains responsibility...but i love it

We both cleaned the boat when we got home. I teach her how to start the motor and all the rest. The deckie cooked chops that we already had out for dinner tonight so tomorrow while im stuck at work she is going to have them. I filleted them when we got home and deboned them. Im a good skipper.
No pics Fishing, I still havent picked up some batteries for the camera.
they certainly are some of the best winter whiting around at the moment as you say summer whiting size .havnt had them this big for a while my brother got 48 at the banks on saturday
If you get the wife on side your over half way there
Good to see she out fished you, she will be keen to go out again. I can't even take the boat out to put fuel in it with out my wife coming for a ride, ( That's how keen a fisho she is ) and you know I wouldn't want it any other way.
Im exactly the same Peter. I am very happy that my wife wants to come out and catch a few fish. I had an old rod and reel that she used yesterday. Now that she really enjoys fishing I will buy her a new outfit and maybe pickup some more gear for me. I have started to teach her all about boat handling and safety and she is enjoying the learning curve.
I taught her how to start the outboard yesterday when we got home to flush the motor and clean the boat. She wants to learn it all so that when we put the boat in the water she can have the motor warmed up and ready while Im parking the car and trailer.
If she really wants to continue learning and developing I will send her on a course so that she can get her licence. I wouldnt mind being a deckie now and then and her being the skipper, at least I get to sleep with the boss.
I cooked up the whiting tonight for my wife. We are both sick with the edge of the flu, which I prob caught at work. I just gently fried them in a pan with some butter and then topped them off with some salt and pepper. She cant have lemon at the moment otherwise I would have put some over the top. I even served them to her in bed. Im definately been house broken hehehehe.
That's good to hear Kel, nurse her back to health so you can get back on the water sooner.
Not many fish taste better than fresh caught and cooked whiting, your making me hungry
Janine my wife joined ausfish before me (talk about keen/ goes under Herm) and have given her boat lessons and she is close to going to get her licence. I even let her drive the boat off and up onto the trailer.
Peter I have enjoyed reading reports from yourself and Janine, they are always interesting and informative. I always show my wife your reports. I am trying to teach Anya the basics just like my dad taught me. Our boat isnt big enough to worry about driving on and off the trailer, it is a 15" plastic Terri Nordic 6020. It is a very nice boat to drive around the bay, my dad have a 14" rogue runabout and he is jealous of ours. He has told all his mates that we have a boat now and he is wanting me to take him to the spots I know. I grew up with him taking me down the pin and fishing short island, back in those days you could always count on catching lots of bream and luderick.
Now it is my turn to teach someone and I am truly enjoying it.
Good to here that you share your boating experience with your partner. I always go out with my wife, who tells me she is "Getting the fishing dt's" when she hasn't had a fish on her rod for a while.
Some guys have to make it a "Boys day out" which is really a bit of a shame.
Just make sure if you go offshore with a large swell that you both take some motion sickness pills, as sea sickness is a real boating turnoff.
We also love surf fishing for Bream (When they finally arrive) and release most of them, perhaps keeping a few for the day's tucker.

My wife is my best friend, I enjoy sharing time in the boat with her. If the doctor hadnt told me that I coudnt go out in the boat for a couple of days we would be out today around the Pine. I spoke to the guy at my local bait shop yesterday and he is going to make up a little combo for her, (which I might pinch when I take my mate out now). So next week I will pick it up for her and hopfully she wont see this post and it will be a surprise.
