    Slow Night Wello Point

Headed out for another fish at spot xyz at Wello with fellow work mate Mick and Brother inlaw Dave. As arranged with T1 we met up at spot xyz sounded a little then told T1: yeah mate here is good for you since you have no sounder. #

Casted out my two rods one with mullay and one with a half a pilly. As I was preparing myself for the nights fishing bang zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz holy crap zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I lept for the rod with the half pilly zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz was batteling to get it out of the rod holder. This rod aint coming out I said kept trying and finally got it out meanwhile the line wasn't stopping zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. This was the freight train that I came for I said zzzzzzzzzzzz. T1 was listening to all the fuss and was getting excited what is it he says, Probably a snapper mate headshake galore. More zzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz tighten drag alittle still zzzzzzzzzz not going to stop this one i said. Then just like nothing it was off. oh no no way # it snapped me off. retrieved my line to fine that my hook and sinker still there it spat the hook no no no .Oh well might be a good night then not. Not a single bite all night then bang Mick was on to one with using a Grinner as bait fish went 48cm. Then just as about we were to call it a night after a very poor effort by the fish bang off goes my line again and I managed to land one for the night. All in all very very quiet night no little ones 3 hits 2 landed and the freight train that got away but it is still out there for next time.

Thanks Got_theFever I am still upset about the train you don't git hits like that everyday and if you don't land it you have to wait for the next freight train and that could be some time.

Outsiderskip: Sure did get a feed squire for dinner tonight yummy

hey tinn those suckers can go, it s like apples and oranges when a decent fish runs, Mate i've had the same problem on larger fish not staying connected with the hooks pulling. In my case its been no slack line not that much hurt but the hooks have pulled. I did ask the question on what the best pattern of hooks give a solid hook up rate. I was using 5 o and 6o hooks and went to gangs. Its strange that most of the time its a effort to get the hook out of a snappery squires mouth ,they connect so well and for other times they just pull after being on a fish for a good two minutes and seem to be real solid, and the other strange thing is on fish 350 to 500 seem no problem with 100% hook up. It always seems a chance on that one you know is a bloody good fish

Yeah I would have to agree with you chief the real big ones are hard to hook up. Must need bigger hooks I was using a 3/0 viking which are very sharp and I have had no problem before hooking up anything even the big jew I caught but this thing just blew me away gee did it run fast. I wonder if anyone here can tell us the best hook size and style for the big snapper?

Thanks mickstar001 I was happy with the catch but not with the freight train still kicking myself.

Tinn, 1 is better than none and at least you had some fun with the train

What I would give to bage my first snapper, on holidays in 3 weeks so will go out and really give it a go, if it doesn't come off there could be some cheap gear and a boat up for sale on ausfish site.

    Re: Slow Night Wello Point

    g'day tinn,

by the sounds of it you were hooked up to a snapper, 4.5kg is the best i've pulled out of there, although i've have seen some pushing the 7kg mark caught along the 6-7m line at times. I've found that using a whole pillie on a gang of 5/0's(3) with no sinker and a piece of lumo tube(20-30mm)on top of the top hook does the trick for me when i fish baits. All i do is cast up current and let out plenty of slack line and let the bait float down current then leave sit for about 10mins then do it all again, i think the secret is to work the bait as the bigger fish tend to feed mid water and 9times out of 10 the bait will get hammered while floating in mid water.I have found the snapper can be a frustrating fish to hook, but this method gets most fish as the speed they hit and run is hard and fast.Set your drag firm but still able to pull line out without strugling so enough to set the hooks and not be busted up.It'll all comes down to trial and error, this method works for me all over the bay, sometimes might have to add a little bit of lead to suit conditions.Have a crack and see how it goes, and hopfully it might work for ya!! by the way i fish with about 20lb line with this method!! hope i all goes well and ya get some big fella's in the boat!!

    cheers Adrian

PS.... the secret is the lumo tube, its been proven on many occasions!!

TINN loses a freight train poor TINN! That's what you get for putting me on a crappy bit of ground... Had you have been nice to me, the fish lords may have been kinder to you! Oh well, maybe you just have to get on board the SS Minnow to land your PB - 3 in 3 trips can't be bad....
