    rous whiting 31/7

    Hello all,
First days of hols yesterday, and a cracker of a day weather wise. Headed over the the entrance of the rous channel (western end) to try and stitch up a feed of divers. I dug some worms on sunday morning, about 60 bucks worth if i had bought them in a shop!
Hit the brine after throwing some liquid gold into the fuel tank, the radio guy at manly told me i was on the log at 06:43.
Now i know the humble whiting is not an iconic or trophy species, but i just love catching them. We drifted around for a bit, before finding a nice patch whilst drifting along the southern bank. The biggest divers i have seen for many years, all 25 to 30cm specimens.
About 10:30, a bit of northerly came in (5knots) and stuffed up our drift. I went back to the northern bank and drifted away from the first green beacon. There was a nice school there as well.
A word of warning for those heading over, there is a lot of weed in depths under 5 metres. Where we found the fish where there was no weed, and depths were between 5 and 6 metres.
Had a quick, sly snapper fish on the way home, at the top of the tide. One good run on a stinking pillie, but the old boy was a bit slow. Back at manly by 1:20ish. Finished with 71 divers, 10 of which were dispatched for dinner by the wife and i last night. No doubt the old boy followed suit.

I love those diver whiting mate. They're not a fish for those who want to massage their ego or skite about but they sure are good on the plate. The other thing I like about them is that they are just the best fish to take little kids out after. A fish a minute and fight like the dickens for their size. My grandsons love to go out with grandpa in the boat to catch them. Diver whiting and grandkids ... the loves of my life.

nice catch axel, we have found that over the last few years if there were any whiting in the rous they were top quality, as opposed to say the ones at the sandhills....i have only ever caught them in the rous around the middle marks as you head north again....is the green marker you mentioned the one right at the start and were they thick enough to anchor at any time
    thanks for the report

    Gday two dogs,
Yes its the first green marker you pass as you enter the Rous from the bay. I have never really anchored to catch divers as i find they prefer a moving bait. Also when i have anchored, usually at the sandhills, i find a lot of fish swallow the hook and thats a bit of a pain. It was ceratinly a good school, we caught them the entire drift which started at the marker and ended about 500 metres to the SE. We only did it twice, by them we had enough fish so we took off.
