    Snapper no show - 2/8

As mentioned on Monday, i was out squire fishing in the bay and brought 2 nice specimens home for tea. The better half enjoyed them so much she actually told me to go out fishing again!!

So the plan was to get out to spot Q earlier to catch the entire bite session. Heading out across the bay at around 3ish, the 5-10knt southerly seemed to be blowing a little stronger then forecasted, and i was surrounded by whitecaps (meaning a wet trip over there in my open tinny), however i pursued, with the thought of another feed of squire. I arrived at the destination, and after fighting the current and the chop, finally the anchor held 4th time lucky. First bait was in the water a little before 4am. And well waited and waited till around 8ish without a single legal fish aboard, only 2 fish were boated, a 10-15cm squire and a big squid (which was kept for bait purposes). With the conditions still remaining too uncomfortable i made the decision to move. I would've loved to go and check out mud isl, as i haven't been that way for a long time, however i didn't take any spare fuel , so on the way in i checked Harries Arti Green Isl and St Helena without a single touch on plastic or bait, and the sounder showed it also.

It was coming down to crunch time as i promised the Mrs i'd bring her a feed home, i lept into plan F, attempt for some whiting on the wynnum/manly foreshore's with the squid that i had caught earlier. so on my way in i kept an eye out for the elderly locals in their dingies, and sure enough, they were out in force and led me straight to the whiting. after catching 16 diver's, i decided i didn't want to clean anymore then that, so i headed in on glassed out conditions at lunch time.

This was the first time i'v ever targeted whiting in the bay, and of course i love the taste, but honestly guys, the people who catch in-excess of 50 at a time, are you nuts?? (no offense). It took me a little over an hour to fillet and bone 16 of them. Now i know why i leave whiting as plan F, altho on the upside, i have a bag full of top snapper bait for the next trip.

Is there an easier way to clean them that i'm unaware of to speed up the process??

Got some photo's, will upload them later... maybe

    dude,
An hour to clean 16 whiting? I reckon you just need more practice, the old boy and i did 70 odd in under 30mins on monday.
A bit more practice and you will get there i am sure. I reckon when you taste them you will not be sorry.
Bummer about the non showing pink fish. We got three on tuedsay afternoon at green, but had to sort through masses of undersized pinkies, tailor and bream to get them. In the end it was hardley worth the bait we burnt through.
Agreed you noe how some bait for your next pink fish sortie, god luck.

I am no expert on whiting, but just straight to the backbone behind the head, turn knife and straight through to the tail. Turn the fillet over and remove the gut cavity. Then de-skin it. Pretty quick. No need to remove any of the little bones as they will disolve during cooking.

You have been a little on the quiet side! I't's about time you cranked the handle of your reels a bit.

The only thing missing from your journey out was the lightning!!
    Oh... and the big grinner!!

You got a good feed though, and plan F worked didn't it? Well done!

Naa, the oversized grinner was there Scalem, captured on a whole pilly over at st helena, just chose to leave that fish out of the post, as they are becomming a regular on my fishing trips.

yeah all those whiting provided us with a great feed. My only problem now is trying to squeeze some more time away from uni and work to get back out there to hunt down my 60cm + pinkie

No snapper no worries you can't expect to catch them easy. You must put in the time and you will be rewarded. Thats what makes fishing fun the challenge. If it was easy to get a snapper there wouldn't be any fun in it
It's all part of the fishing experience
