The master at work...
A couple of weeks ago Blackend made the following comment regarding fishing Wello Point with Placcies...
So me being a total amateur in the fine art of flicking placcies I thought I would enlist the services of a master . Having met T1 for the first time at the River 2 Mud provided the perfect opportunity to enlist his services - so a midweek (wednesday evening) session was arranged for the 2nd August. The plan was to flick placcies from 4pm to dusk then burley up and fish baits till around midnight - when in theory we would have bagged out (T1 being the master an all ) and we could go home - happy and be up in time for work the next morning.Originally Posted by Blackened
As you well know the weather during the last few days has been just about perfect and Wednesday evening was no exception. All started well... we headed out to T1's "secret spot xyz" I threw on a 4" turtle back worm in watermelon and first throw - was asking T if he thought they were any good (he being the master an all - he should know ) He was just saying that he had never done any good on them - so he didnt think they were any good - when slam a short zzzzzzzz and in the boat came squire at 34cms replies T... "oh... then again I could be wrong" not a bad start for a first cast... next cast another hit - the following cast a smaller model - Geez the master has put us onto the spot here... meanwhile T is taking off his punkinseed gulp in favour of something green. On my next cast... zzzzzzzzzzzzz and a nice run - a good fight on light gear and finally boated a 45cm squire... a PB for me - after countless models at 40cms - finally the drought is broken - T1 truly is a master..... Meanwhile the master was yet to take a hit
As it was getting dark we anchored and started to burley for the night shift - with a good start expectations were high. But as quickly as it started the bite stopped so we burleyed and waited..... 4 hours later we had lost about 2 baits, boated a small shovelnose - which went back and that as about it.... Hmmmm - But 'The Master' was optimistic he kept saying - all it takes is one good fish to make a slow trip good... so OK... so we waited - and waited - and waited. We tried every conceivable bait - squid, Pilchard, Grinner even the super secret, but highly touted mullay failed to produce. About midnight however the bites came thick and fast... The master boats a nice tailor - which goes back out as a strip bait - missed a few other alleged "good fish"... slowly the number of boated fish started to grow... pity most of them were no bigger than my hand - so needless to say they went back - we felt like we were the soup kitchen feeding the thousands of homeless baby squire, tarwine and bream.
Finally at about 2.30 am - I'd had enuff, either we had to do something different or go home - with just the 1 fish... so it was suggested that we break out the placcies once more - even tho neither of us had ever had much success fishing placcies for squire at night. The master broke out his "threadfin killer" and I wore a whole sandworm... after a few hits and misses - I changed to my favourite bream placcy, the shrimp -in nuclear chicken, a few hits and a small bream...
Meanwhile the master is working very quietly on the other side of the boat with a bent rod.... another "rock cod".....?? I called it a "rock cod" because the master had had a "fish" on earlier - that wasnt pulling very much - but it was really heavy... so out came the net....eventually when he got it in it was a massive lump of S*#T with all coral stuff hanging off it - we knew it wasnt a keeper so after a kiss and a few photos it was released
The problem with this "rock" was that as soon as it saw the boat it started to run... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and didnt want to stop till it reached the Brissie River... finally T turns it and after a while colour and after some perfect net work by yours truly, up comes a PB squire for the master around 64cms.
Even though it was 3am, that spurred us on for about a 100 more "last drifts" and 1700 "last casts" The master proves that the first was no fluke and boats a smaller - but legal specimen... and that was about it for the night... we finally called it a night at about 4am.
It was probably my longest single fishing session at around 12 hours - for 3 keepers... but we both PBed... so gotta be happy about that! Just goes to show that the master was right... it just takes one good fish...
Had a great time, great company and good fish.... next time T... we bag out and get home early! Thank you O master for showing this humble grasshopper the magic of thy mysterious ways
Piccys below... sorry it was a long story.... but it was a l-o-n-g night
The master at work...
I liked this photo of T's PB the best - he requested the one above... had to comply - he IS the master after all
Love the blue spots...
Nice catch T1.. I haven't used plastics much before.. only a couple of casts here and there, but I never knew you can use them at night. How do the fish see them?
And Adamy...
Thats reel keen fishing till that time of the morning!!!
How's that!
Well done Adam, I guess you were stuffed after such a long night, another hour and you could have fished the sun coming up.
Your dedication will see you up the PB again and again, then we will be calling you OB1!!
Scalem
HA...OB1... thats funny Yeh we discussed that - we were coming in while the early morning shift was going out.... We looked at the water - looked at the weather and said hey... we should go fishing... go out 4am - be back by 8... only 4 hours
you are all mad should have done the last 4 hrs
well done lads, its great to see the close reefs working so well
Now see thats why you and cheech are considered the "other masters" ... it was tempting - but with the wife rolling over in bed and finding no hubby - 4am phone calls means go home (if you know whats good for you)
We argued the those "technical merits" before choosing the placcys - fish either see - smell or feel (using their lateral lines) so we chose placcies with movement and smell - gulps - big ones - being the preferred option. Plus snapper are a night feeder - look at the size of those eyes... they can "see" what they need to to get a feed.Originally Posted by R K HILL

Adamy, not bad at all. I would be happy with that and remember PB's are made to be broken
T1 do you want to pick up another sponsor child / fisherman!!!!!!!! Janine packs a good picnic you could be captain T1 for the day or night
Or is Tinn the man LOL
Peter
Fantastic fish there T1 and congrats to you both on the PB's.
It has always been a looming question when fishing at night whether you still catch fish on plastics in the dark, and you have answered my question!
Thankyou
Well done guys you got on to a nice fish [smiley=thumbsup.gif] . Nice to see you had a good time and got no sleep
But it was woth it for T1 and your PB good onya guys. Fishing has no time limit so remember when venturing out with T1 you may never return until all the bait has dissapeared
It's all part of the fishing experience
Very nice squire T1, Patience is the key to success.
Adamy congrats on the PB.
Wello has plenty on offer if you are prepared to put the time in.
Towards the end of 05 a mate and i took home two 60+cm squire during a night trip using the zoom plastics.
The bigger fish will hunt in the shallows under cover of darkness.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz love that sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Brent
