hit the water at 5.15 am from scarby and headed down margate way for the dawn bite hopefully , wasn't long and the fish were onto the 5inch jerkbaits in the nuclear chicken colour .
fished till 6.30 landing several fat whiting a few choppers and half a doz squire to 50 cm as well as the pikeathon , headed to clontarf to pick up a mate and decided to give the reef a miss and hit the sand flats in search of a flathead . dropped a few boat side round the 50 cm mark and saw one fish nail the plastic only meters from the boat and then watched as it tried to tie itself in a knot before it to spat the jig . with the tide well and trully on the run in we moved a little further up stream and it was here that i cast the 4inch gulp and landed it on the head of a fish as it was on instantly only to drop the bloody thing when i put some weight on it give it a few seconds and twitched it again and the hook was solid into what i thought was a log as there was no life in this thing at all untill it realised it was on the move , then i called it for a ray as it kept running and sucking to the bottom not wanting to come up at all then about 2 mins into the fight on 10lb leader i saw the tail of this thing and said to bevan " umm i think ya betta get the net out mate cause its not a ray " so after a few more runs we had a good look at the fish and saw the jig was in nice and solid and there was no risk of the leader rubbing through so the drag was backed of a little more and eventually we had her in the net and hopped out on the sand for a few snaps and bevan had the pleasure of escorting her back into the water and watched her swim off showing no ill effects of the ordeal .
it went 76cm and and estimated 5 kilos caught on the penn affinity 1000 on top of a pin point tournament 3-5kg rod .
cheers swano
