80cm Flathead caught in the Logan in a Kayak

Here's a few pics of the big girl I caught today. She was caught on a 3" powerbait minnow in pumpkinseed on a 1/16th oz jighead. Also caught 3 other much smaller ones.

Fish was caught out of a Viking Espri kayak. There is a more detailed report at AKFF.net

Nice fish mate. How do you go landing big fish in a kayak? I am thinking of getting a hobie and seeing fish like that re-enforces the pro's. Do you think it's worthwile getting a sounder mounted?

That's a big girl Dunks! Musta been close to the top of the tide cos that water is as blue as gets for the Logan.

    Great fish !
Just out of curiosity, when you catch something of that size in a kayak, do you have to row back into shore to land it?

Re: 80cm Flathead caught in the Logan

This was only my third trip out in my kayak and let me tell you it was a struggle to land the big girl. I had her in the foot well of the kayak with both my feet on top of her to stop her from going anywhere. I paddled to a nearby sandbar and took the happy snaps.

Lone Wolf - it was actually right at the start of the run in water was muddier where I actually caught it but at the sand bar the water was crystal clear.

Matthais - there was a guy out on the Logan today in a hobie. He was cheating though and had a 3.5 hp motor on the back. Definately get a sounder in the pic where you can see my yak the odd looking bar thing that I have over the footwells is my sounder and the waterproof box tucked under the front bungees holds my battery.

Here's a close up pic of it. The transducer runs of the arm you see going over the side. It is made up of 20mm pvc pipe.

Get a yak they are lots of fun.

Nice fish Dunks I think the idea of fishing from a kayak looks like fun. A few years ago I saw some guys out fishing for mackerel on the Palm Beach reef from their sea kayaks. The brag mat is a great idea as well. Where do you get them from? You can mark the mat with any big ones you get as well!
