It was one of those trips where expectations were low. We all knew the end of the bream season was upon us, but couldn't bring ourselves to pass up the opportunity to get out for a fish at 'The Pin' yesterday evening
Arriving at our chosen spot well before dark, we set up camp beside the sunken mangroves, which extend out underwater in places, providing shelter for the fish. Only got a few tiddlers to start with, but that was to be expected. The wintery chill had left the airy 5knt breeze, and as the sun prepared to greet the horizon without a fish on the scoreboard, we were all thinking of a warm bed or a lambrusco with the Missus - were we pushing our luck this time? Placing the rods neatly in the rod-holders, we sat back...and waited. Sometimes in life there is that rare occasion where you just have to let go...and let God. There was nothing more we could do. Without even a bite to tell, the evidence was all there that the bream season was well and truly spent, but maybe....surely...there would be someth...
THANKYOU SIR!!! Dave yelled with excitement. We all stopped and watched, bewildered, as Dave's Snyderglas bent over like a moslem praying. Suddenly Captian Dazza's rod bent over as well, and all hell broke loose! All eyes were riveted to the action to see what Dave had hooked. None more than Dazza, whom was so intent on admiring the 'Roaring Lion' in full swing that it took him a good 10 seconds to realize that his own rod was taken off like a freight train! It seemed like an eternity before he reacted, but he finally picked up the rod and joined Dave in a dual battle. Dave landed his fish easily - a respectable bream of 28cm. But the Captain was still battling. Pulling against the raging current, Dazza managed to heave the creature to the surface for a second, allowing us to catch a glimpse of a angry beast with a mottley brown texture. Its tall spiny dorsal fin pierced the surface like a shark poised to attack. But the fight wasn't over, the fish making one last dash for the depths with its razor-sharp teeth slashing at the 12lb line, before coming reluctantly into the net. First of all Dazza thought it might be a stringray, then a shovelly, but it was none of this sort. A predator to behold, a gigantic 67cm dusky flathead!
Anyone else had any luck at The Pin lately? Anyone got any other fishin plans now that the bream season is officially over?
