Quality Fish - Land Based - Bribie - Friday 1st

Friday is all day fishing day so I returned to Bribie to look for a few new land based spots. Water and weather are getting warmer so I expect I will be ditching the waders soon and just wandering around with some sand shoes and shorts. However I could not resist starting off at Buckley’s hole which has been so productive for me on an early morning run out tide. I was armed with the usual array of primarily pumpkinseed coloured Gulps [/color]and Powerbaits and the 2” Gulp Shrimp which has also been very good for Bream. I was also trying out the 4” Turtleback Worm which had worked on a few lizards at Pinkenba during the week.

First cast at around 5.45 am was with a Powerbait Realistix 3” Minnow – drag was set too tight - the reel almost immediately started zinging and then line (1.8kg Fireline) and leader (4kg Fluoro) parted company - snap. My heart was thumping as I fumbled around trying to tie on a new leader in the dark and the wind – but at moments like that you know you are going to have a good day.

Got rigged up again and a couple more casts this time with the 4” Turtleworm and wallop and a big run perhaps 10 metres of line. The drag was set properly this time so I let it run and then gradually clicked it a little tighter. 7’2” 2-4 kg Dropshot rod was bent over nicely but starting to creak a little. Then it just stopped and I thought I must be snagged. Stalemate – I pulled left and right but there was no give. Then it started wriggling again and went for another run - I started towing it backwards towards the beach but there were still a few determined surges left and right and then a circle right around me. By now I could see it was a decent cod – I dragged him up the beach and put him in the keeper bag. 1kg - 41cm – nice fish for starters.

Straight back in this time with the 3” Gulp Pumpkinseed Minnow – two or three cast later I thought I was snagged on the drop off as the line just stopped dead in mid retrieve. I loosened the drag and suddenly the reel took off again – This one took a while as I wanted to get him up and over the drop off without sawing through the line on the ledge. Took me a good 5 minutes of tugging and running but then I started walking him back up the beach and could see I had a great lizard on. Got him landed with a decent wave and there I had a great 2kg - 68cm Flathead.

The sun was now up and the turtle who lives nearby kept popping his head up to have a look at me. The wind and rising swell was keeping the boat traffic to a minimum. There were grey clouds all around but the rain never landed on me and the morning just got better and better with a 38cm Bream and three more Flathead - a 54 cm and 2 x 45cm keepers. The Pike were also keen on the soft plastics – especially the Shrimp – and I kept the 3 biggest at around 40cm.

On the way home I dropped the shrimp in at Welsby Bridge just as we were approaching high tide and got two 30cm juvenile Flatheads from two casts – the was crystal clear and I could see them turning somersaults underwater as the hook bit. I put them both back and headed off to get my son from school. What a way to start September!

That's excellent. Great result for someone land based. A lot of boat owners would have liked that haul themselves. Great report. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

thats a great day out fishing good on you. I tried early morning last weekend at buckley's thinking I would give it a shot after your success...and nothing haha. Just a few pike biggest around 45cm. I got there just an hour or so after low though at about at 7. (too late?)

When im able to fish again (footy injury) I'd love to give it a go with you I have friday's free aswell.

    Well done, Cheers

Early morning just after dawn seems to have produced the largest fish there, but timing seems to be less important than the water level. You need to be able to stand pretty close to the drop off - so the couple of hours around low are nearly always the most productive. I doubt I will be able to resist going back on one or other of the next couple of Fridays - so give me a shout if you see me there.
