Broken Saratoga Rod
Despite the crappy weather predicted for Thursday being my day off i decided to head off regardless, sick of this crappy weather. Put in at Raby bay to see one other trailer there, conditions looked great until i headed out from the ramp. Waves were probably 1m+ with 20Kn winds. Wtf am i doing here i thought halfway across. Took it slowly and being really safe eventually arrived at peel at around 4.30Pm. To cut a long story short caught probably 15 squire - only two keepers - both going just under 40cm. Broke my E-bay special saratoga Rod, and left peel around 8pm to beautiful conditions dropped off to around 8Knots - phhhhewwwwwww i thought
All in all another beautiful night on Moreton Bay!
Out of curiosity how did you break the saratoga rod? Might be a story in itself? Glad you at least got out to satisfy that fishing bug that hits us all. The feed looked yummy! [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Believe it or not but it was from pulling in one of those 40cm Squire! This is the second i have broken in as many weeks! Cheap Ebay rods im guessing, or perhaps me . Felt a bite and pulled back on the rod quickly, wasnt bent over that far and snapppppp. Would hate to think what would happen if i had a big one on! Time to invest in a decent rod i think!
Managed to get the squire in with a broken rod with all of the tension on the closest guide, that was a task!

o mate looks like and awsome cook up mmmm!!! to bad for the rod mate
that meal looks good
how about that recipe then?
nice we just bought a saratoga j60 reel (i hope that doesnt break ) only $40 thats pretty good if anyone else got this reel let us know how it is.
Hi Mick,
well done -bit of shame only a few keepers- am sure the dinner went well- am pretty frustrated with this weather also.
Reference that saratoga rod - I think they have a 12 month warranty on them- but the postage will probably come into play. I have a kandji ( same stable) spin 3-7 kg,one pce, ebay special sitting in the boat- had it last 6 months along with spin reel- it s had a fair work out but been good so far ,touch wood.
It may just be me then Pegasus . Chubby, just simply filletted them, coated them in egg yolk followed by bread crumbs, shallow fried them in the pan for only 3-4 mins in about 1/2cm of vegetable oil, garlic to taste and lemon - yummy! Best of luck with your reel Fish boy!!
Hey Mick!
You did a lot better than us!
We had "the bug" Thursday (always got it really) and my house mate and I both had a day off so we put the seajay in at Comslie and after collecting some live bait, headed towards the mouth (looked great with water like glass and minimal wind) and then we got to the mouth.. Negotiated a massive cargo ship and two tugs wakes and initially thinking it must still be from these, the waves just didnt stop.. The trip to Mud was slow in 15knt + winds and perhaps 1m swell with wind gusts and random sloppy seas on top making it even more uncomfortable..
By the time we got to mud and naviagted around to our spot on the North Eastern Corner, it was too rough to sit on the chairs comfortably so we fired up and left within 10mins for an even rougher and rather wet trip back..
Fished the river for a while for 5 nice "elbow slapper" whiting but they shut down and then the bites were few and far between and we were cold from the spray when travelling in from mud..
The things we do for a feed and fun eh? Better luck next time!
Brad :-)
Either way braddles its still good to get out on the water, regardless of being bashed around a bit by mother nature! It seems no matter what i do, cant seem to get onto a 40cm+squire, really starting to get on my nerves seeing as i get out there every week!
Mick
Mate either one of two things here. Firstly you might have superman powers and yanking too hard on the rod to sink the hooks in. Do your fish get airborne when you strike them? If so ease up a little. Second option is the rods are crap and time to look at other rods maybe? I have never broken a rod ever and I have used some cheapies in my time. It's good that determination won and you still got your fish into the boat.Originally Posted by mickstar001

Poodroo, am i striking to hard if they fly over your head and land in the middle of peel island . I should ease off a little on the strike i think, just get to exited. Like you said, time for a quality rod i think .
Lol Mickstar001, if I happen to be out on the water and see sets of Snapper dentures flying over my head I will know you are out on the water again.
