noosa bar

am going up to noosa in october for a week. What the go getting out through the noosa bar? will it be ok to go through in my boat,489 stacer with 75hp? iam staying on 1 of the canals so boat will be in water all week. I would love to get outside, but obviously will have to have good day to do so. Is it far out to the reefs? Any help would really be appreciated.

Greg, I've watched several boats crossing the bar yesterday arvo and this morning. It's not all that tidy I've got to say and there isn't much swell on. 1 boat took nearly an hour to work out what path to take in and eventually crossed through a gutter several hundred metres to the north of where the channel normally is. Boat going out this morning took the same channel and didn't have much fun at all. Nor did I cause that's where I was spinning for tailor. I haven't been able to identify a channel as such straight out from the river where we'd normally cross but Trekka went straight out this morning - flat out.
It would be a good idea to check it out from the southern side of the river before you head. It looks shallow all the way across to me other than the gutter on the north shore.

Reefs - Sunshine is very close as is little and big halls. North would be 8nm and Chardons a little further. Sunshine has good structure and nice trout and reg reefies and a few snapper lately. Chardons good on the snapper and north small snapper, cobes and reg reefies.

Good idea is to see if you can hook up with another boat when you you first go out.
Alot of boats go over on that bar

I crossed it last weekend and have got to say that the channel is in a sh!t of a position atm. The channel runs almost parallel to the north shore beach and while the swell stays low should not be to much of a problem for most skippers but if the swell get up there are going to be a few boat get into trouble as you virtually have to run side on to the break for about 150-200m and if a set comes throuygh you will have no where to go. i crossed it last sunday and it was much better than usual i thought. when there is little swell it is pretty good. if there are northerlies its a bit messy but early morning are quite good.

the channel is on the far side of the river mouth and on the way out it skirts the far side of the river. it can be dangerous when there is some swell around so take care when go out. and i dont try and cross 3 hours before or after low tide.

there are a couple of charter boats that go out at around 6 am so if u want some guidance just try and follow them out.

ps. sunshine is a good option if u dont want to travel to far. some good fish there aswell on dawn and dusk

Sunshine as the name suggests is directly out the front of sunshine beach. If you head out the Noosa Bar and head east hugging the national park once you get around the headland at hells gates you should see boats on the reef itself. The reef is scattered across a large area so you will need to sound around for a while to find some good bottom. If you want I could PM you a couple of marks tomorrow if I remember to get them off my GPS... If you don't want to head out through Noosa then the best bet is Mooloolooba, but that would be a half hour drive. There is some good fishing in the Noosa River itself. Try the mouth of the river at dusk for a few tailor. It's best on a run out tide.
