Pinkenba & Bribie - From the Shore

After a couple of weeks of school holidays and fishing with the kids I was desperate for my regular fishing Friday expedition. Don’t get me wrong, I love going out with my 9 yr old son - but he is so good at getting snagged and tangled that my plastic rarely hits the water! He could also sleep for Australia in the Olympics so early starts are out unless I want to put him off fishing for life.

I first wanted to give a quick report on a pre - dawn wander along the Pinkenba rockwall last Tuesday (10th). I wandered along the rockwall for about half an hour at around 5.00 am and finally settled on a spot with plenty of weed and oysters about 0.5 km along from the cement plant. The water was pretty murky so I followed the advice everyone gives and put on a dark coloured plastic – 3” GULP Shaky Shad in Salt and Pepper colours which is basically speckled black and grey. I was just thinking how many cod there seem to be around – every other post seems to include a good size one at the moment when zzzzzzzz and a solid stop as if I’m snagged. I wiggled the rod a bit and then another short run and then no more resistance as I reeled in a 25 cm Estuary Cod. I quickly put him back and cast out again in the same direction - a couple of casts later I was on again with a much more solid fish – exactly the same pattern and this time it’s a 38cm model – very nice. Just before 6.00 am (which was about low tide) I pulled in a 46cm flattie in the same spot.

This was all a good warm up for Friday and I was up at about 3.30 am and heading for my own favorite - Buckley’s Hole on Bribie. I waded out into the water at about 4.30 am. It was a run out tide and there was the initial glow of dawn behind me as I wandered out towards the drop off casting and retrieving the trusty 3” GULP Shrimp. Third cast and I‘ve got a decent fish on - I was not even at the drop off yet – he must have been waiting in about 3’ of water right on the top of the ledge. I drag him back to the bank and he is a nice flattie - 1.1 kg – 57cm with the plastic and a big mouthful of weed - never seen that before.

I wander back out and get to the edge. On my second cast out over the ledge into the deeper water with a 3” Green Pumpkinseed Minnow Grub this time - I am onto another cod. I know it’s a cod because I am getting used to their style - I would love to know how they manage to just stop dead in the water like they do and maintain the pressure on the line. Anyway after a bit of creaking he eventually came up over the ledge and into the keeper bag.

Now I was really looking forward to a good day with a couple of good fish in the first ½ hour – but unfortunately as the tide turned by about 7.30 am it just seemed to die on me. I had a couple of pike and lost what I think was another cod but after running through some other plastics I gave up and went for breakfast and a weigh in at the tackle shop.

After breakfast I bought some worms and walked much further along the beach past the hole towards the southern tip of the island. I wandered out onto the sand banks there and switched to a No1 sinker and No4 suicide hook in the hope of catching some whiting. Well I have never really been successful with whiting before but this time it worked. Each time I would cast out I could see a huge shoal of tiny fish head towards the bait and then perhaps ten to twenty seconds after they passed over it I would get hit by a bigger fish underneath. Unfortunately they were all too small to warrant keeping (and I had dinner arranged already) so I let them all go but it was great fun. Once I had finished the worms I put on a Pumpkinseed 3” Powerbait and wandered back along the sure in about 3-4 feet of water. It was now just after noon and I was casting methodically in semicircles and moving slowly along the beach – Suddenly when I was about to give up, I hooked up with a 44cm flathead and then a couple of casts later a 35 cm model I put them both back and headed for the car.

It was another great day and the first for some time that did not include a bream. I was struck by the large number of baitfish all along the shoreline – there were Garfish everywhere and they kept swimming very close to me whenever I stopped. The resident turtle nearly bumped into my leg at one point and the big blue jelly fish were everywhere. No fishing next week – off to Singapore – but I am thinking of taking the telescopic rod!
