Lower Brisbane River. Grunter Bream, Threadfin.

    Hey Guys.

Got down to the beloved spot a bit later then expected at around 7:30 p.m. But hopes were still very high as the tide had just turned and was coming in for the high. Angus (Bris_Vegas) and his work buddy Greg, who I met on the last few outtings, were all ready down there. His other work buddy John as well as two members of the brisbane fishing site were on their ways down.

They held up what looked like a Jewie, but had the colours of a Salmon. Couldn't tell from a far. But it ended up being a solid Grunter Bream caught on dead low tide. The Grunter went a big 61cms . Not sure on weight but I would estimate it at around 2-2.5 kgs. It apparently went hard on 10lb line. Diving under and around the pontoon before surfacing it. I had heard reports of them being caught regularly at the mouth of the River on plastics a few months back. But it seemed like a bit of a come and go thing. Though some are definately still in there as only a few days ago another mate caught one a bit smaller then Greg's in the Upper Reaches.

As usuall an average Catfish followed > .The rest of the fishing crew arrived. Though things kind of went slow on the run in as they normally do .The bait wasn't so abundant, though there doesn't ever seem to be much bait fish around during the darker hours of the day. Except for one good cast from Angus, secruring a good haul of Herring later in the night.

Before the next fish was caught John and one of the brisbane fishing members (Sorry mate. Forgot your name. Please forgive ) had left . We said our goodbyes and said to check the report tommorow since we will be catching around 20 Salmon tonight. (I wish! )

Soon after Terry notices a piece of Greg's line that had snapped off on a passing boat at about 8 p.m. It's somehow back with us , and not out on the boat's prop. We all still don't understand how it got there but anyway Terry starts pulling it up and, 'Hey, it's a Cod!' Hanging from the same hook, main line and home made wire trace that Greg had made before the trip and had snapped off earlier . Unfortunatley the Cod had really wanted that Herring and the hook as well as half the trace were way down past his gob and in his gut. He was bleeding quite rapidly and tought it was only right to take him home and eat him . Esspecially since he was just legal at 36cms.

We were wondering when the tide was going to stop and sit still as this is when all bities break loose, the pause between tides. The tide slowed and stopped at around 12 a.m. my new Barra set up starts getting nibbles. As I thought it was a Catfish I calmly and unexcitingly picked up the rod and continued conversation while feeling the small nibbles.

I decide to strike and 'Yep, got him'. I could all most guarantee and called it for a dodgie old ray with the nibbles and what felt like a dead weight just casually coming towards me. After retrieving about 5m of line I feel a good head shake, then another and another and bang away he goes! Easily peeling off 50lb braid and max drag set on the Millionaire S.W. 203 for about 10m. I was still not 100% sure of what it was though still beleived it to be a Ray. Since when did Salmon nibble!? .

Since tonight of course! Though at first it looked like a shade of grey top and white bottom in the darkness on the surface 10m out. Two of us, including myself, called it for a Bully. Though Angus had his doubts. We soon got a good look and agrred with a Salmon. After a few darting runs still tearing of a locked drag, under the pontoon and aiming for pylons. The fish swam along side the pontoon with the best fight from both this season and last from a Threadfin. Though no jump . Still not wanting to give up he was thrashing about and carrying on next to us. Angus did a great job in landing the fish and up she came. A bigger then average 112cm King Threadfin and an estmated 8kgs.

Got some quick flicks on the brag mat and with my self and the crew and he, or probably she, was back in the water in under 2 mins . The most tiring part of catching the Salmon is releasing them. Sitting there for about 20mins just swimming them back and forth can get quite annoying when the fish doesn't want to live! But once angain Gus did a nice job at the release .

Terry secured one more average sized Ray before we called it a night at around 1:15 a.m. There are pictures of Terry's Ray, Greg's nice Grunter Bream and Estuary Cod to follow if Angus decides to post them up. I only have the one picture of the Salmon which I wil post now. Sorry bout the detailed post! It was yet another top Brisbane River fishing session!

    Cheers, Troy

tobig: Nar haven't taken the time to target them from my kayak. I'll need to get a big anchor to do so as well . I'll definately be doing it sooner or later that's for sure.

Heading down to Newcastle in an hour so probably won't reply for a few days unless I can find a computer down there.

You guys work hard for 'em and deserve the result, nice work on the release Angus. Congrats on the report as well, if your writing style keeps improving at this rate I'll have to buy a magazine to read about the captures before too long.

    Hey Troy,

Seen heaps of your catches on angus's 'brisbaneriverclassic' website! I will have to agree with shayned that yous deserve everything you catch. You have the time to put into it and your techniques are prooving effective!

adding to that it was a fantastic read, and the picture really is well worth the effort!~ It doesn't seem as big as the picture in your avitar but aye, stil a worthy catch. Nice bi catch aswell! I don't eat fish myself, and the all these posts about threadfin int he river makes me want to tryand target them... but I have no idea! All in good time aye!

Anyway champ... kee up the good work... I hope angus makes a post so I can catch a glimpse of this grunter breambo!

Oh yeah, I will be heading down for the weekend to NEWcastle aswell. I was hopeing I could find soem tiem to go for a fish but with so much on ... who knows! Good luck champ!

    George.

Nice Fish man, looks like global warming is certainly setting in.

just be careful in the kayak, the large tankers/city cat and tugs wont see you.

    cheers.
