DUNK ISLAND - GT'S AND MORE

Just got back from a week at Dunk Island, we went on a charter with local guide Alistair Pyke. Caught my first GT on a Bills Bug popper and second GT on a River to Sea Dunbell Popper also got a queenfish on a baby bass zoom. My wife got a massive cod on a live hardy head and a golden trevally on a 4inch swimming mullet gulp. we had a great time and here are the photos.

Some of the best examples of those species that I have seen in a while. Not hard to see that you had a good time. Well done. I am sure you will be talking about that trip for some time to come.

Nice GT's Lanks, couldn't beat my trevally record without flying to an exotic fishing location hey? 16kg of cod for Jodie that has got to beat your biggest cod by a fair bit, what was your biggest again? We will see who holds the records when we come up with you next time?????

Yeah couple of nice fish there Lanks but no record unless it's on your gear buddy. Would like to see a GT that size on a Certate with 16lb braid zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Well done on the catch though.

Conditions look testing in the first 2 shots but great to see you still made the most of it.

yeah Mark there would be no stopping these guys on 16lb braid. we were fishing about 30m from a large rocky bomie/island and had to lock the drag as much as possible to stop being bricked. i almost went overboard a couple of times and the second gt straightened the trebble on the river to sea popper and pulled the wire out of the bottom of the popper from the eyes down to the first trebble. the gear used on the gt's was a penn spinfisher reel (a few years old and well used) and not sure of the type of rod. it had 50lb braid and 50lb leader. the golden trevally and queenie were caught on the certate and a steve starling squidgy rod 4-6kg and jodi got the cod on a small 2-4kg rod 2500 penn reel loaded with 10lb mono!!

on the weather we were sheltered on the inside of the bommie in a way that sheltered us from the 2m swells that can be seen in the background. we were probably only fishing in 1m swell at the worst and other than a bumpy ride out there, the conditions didnt really bother us.

Dunk Island is a 30 minute ferry trip from Mission Beach, which is located about 2 hours drive south of Cairns.
