    Mud tuesday! whats this fish?

Went out to mud this morning with my youngest for a quick fish before he had to be at school, area was alive with mac tuna and in spite of it being a bit lumpy we headed out to the reef running north south on the east side of island, anyway caught a few small squire around 30 cm and was worried my boy wasnt going to hook up when a squeel came from his end of the boat followed by a screaming drag and he was onto a train, i popped the motor and started chasing the fish which i thought was a snapper by its runs but im thinking its a grunter bream? im not sure as ive never caught one, it was 74cm and weighed 5.5kg, just wondering on the eating quallities of these fish and are they a regular catch at mud?.

fantastic catch. I am assuming bait not soft plastic? Yes, spotted grunter, excellent eating and very rare in these parts at that size.

No it was soft plastics, son got him with a berkley 3 inch minnow and 1/6 oz head, 8lb fireline with a 16 lb leader, and reel was old diawa samuria which im not reel keen on but it did the job for him.

definetly a grunter, or some people call them javelin fish and one of my favourites in eating qualities, was out the other night chasing barra and my mate landed a half decent one. Keep them coming in the boat and it will keep the tribe happy well done!!!

We got 61cm one in the Lower Brisbane River last week. There was quite a few caught in the Brisbane River back around April. But a few are still here. Another person I know caught a 45cm one two weeks back also. With all this global warming business we've now got Threadfin Salmon and Grunter Bream. The Barra are on their way! Bring on the C.F.C.'s!
