hey guys. i went up to a little place up near tin can bay called Poona last week. me and a mate stayed for a couple of days and caught nothing. the sounder on the boat was going off its head but we could'nt pull a fish. I'm thinking about going back up for another try so if anyone can give me a few tips i would appreciate it.... thanks
Tip number one... If you use it, turn the fish ID on the sounder off!
This feature is notoriously inaccurate. (at least in my experience)
You are better off getting used to what you see on the screen and interpreting it yourself.
I'm pretty used to my sounder now, and as a bit of a test, I anchored myself in some clean shallow water (I couldn't clearly see bottom, but could make it out !) The sounder indicated what it should - a flat sandy bottom. Turned the fish ID feature on and lo and behold within about 30 secs, there's fish under the boat!And they kept coming! At least, until I returned the sounder to it's ususal mode. I can pretty much guarantee that a school didn't pass through at the precise moment I switched it to Fish ID.! Which leads me to the conclusion the Fish ID on my sounder is cr@p!
I can't really help you too much with the area, but in the electronics board there's a really good read about sounders and interpreting what you see.

Try up the top of Poona Creek - lots of trees, rocks and structure and some great jack/ cod spots. I've had some fun with tarpon up there too - watch the tides though!
There's another small creek to to south of the Poona Creek called Black Swan Creek that I've caught some big jacks in, as well as a heap of flathead around the mouth.
Low tide option - walk out along the north bank of Poona Creek as far as you can go flicking SP's into the main channel - there are some big fish there.
Good fishing, and catch and release where you can.
The sand banks over at Fraser can produce some good flatties and whiting at the right times (depends on the pro action) if you can make it across, and there are some good bommies scattered throughout that section of the strait in a bit of water that produce a variety of reefies. Also keep an eye out for the tuna boils all throughout the stait, a recent post on here made mention of plenty of bonito a bit furthur north and I heard of some nice mack tuna coming on over the weekend despite the weather.
Most of my Sandy Strait experience is just south of Poona but alot of this area is very similar. Also depends what you have in mind to target I guess, as some other blokes have mentioned the Jack should be coming on in Black Swann or even further down at Shark if you can make it in.

hey folks you may be able to help me also as i'm going to boonaroo near there early next year. should i head to poona creek also or are there other options near boonaroo area. Any advice is appreciated. PAUL...
Boonooroo is pretty open if its windy, a great peice of water close by is Kauri creek or the islands off Maaroom if the straits are too rough. Everything from Barra to Bream.

One other thing what are you guys getting your jack on, livies, dead bait or strip cause the jack i'v caught in the past have pretty much been caught on livies........
