Hello fellow ausfishers, on Saturdaymorning my dad and I set out for Moreton Island to go chase some mackeraltuna and some yellow tail kings on livies but this didn’t happen. We set of from the pine at 4:00 in the morning and headed out to Redlcliffe to get some pike but nothing was there (maybe because the tide was running to slow ) so we headed of to Tangalooma to see if we could catch any pike there but nothing their either. So we headed over to the wrecks to see if we could get anything on mack slugs.
We sat there for about 5 mins casting at the wrecks when suddenly my dads (rainbowrunner’s) rod started to scream. After a short fight we pull in a 60cm yellowtail kingfish and in the esky it goes. As we were drifting we saw this huge mackerel chasing garfish but I couldn’t get it to hook up, so off we went up to Bulwer to find some yakkas and slimy mackerel.
When we got there we saw some patches of bait on the sounder and drop the jigs down, all we could manage was whiptail so we filled the live bait tank up and headed for curtain. We dropped down the whiptail and caught nothing but we saw this yellow-tail king smashing hardy heads on the surface but just missed him, so we packed up and headed for tangalooma again.
We stopped at the usual place and through some mack slugs around again. As I was casting I saw a group of fish sitting on the surface so had a go at them and missed a hit but then they went so off we went to the beacons to try to catch some mackerel.
When we got there we anchored up and through out some livies and sat there for half an hour. As we were about to leave we saw one guy pull in a reasonable size mackerel on a mack slug so we went and had a go. We sat there for at least 2 hours with plenty of hits and misses and 3 fish ranging from 53cm-64cm. We then headed home and looked for some mackeraltuna on the way home but only saw a school which was very skittish. All in all we had a fun day chasing mackerel.
Cheers,
Bassamundi
