Well, We thought we would give the Bay another crack. After 5 or 6 trips over the last few months. We have mostly come home empty handed, wet (only got good weather once), and wondering why we bother.
Saw in "going fishing" that a few other were going out to Mud and thought why not!!
So we departed home (Pottsville Nth NSW) at 3.30am. After a heart stopping moment with roo bounding across the M1 we made it to C/land about 5ish.
We headed over to Mud whist keeping an eye out for birds working. Found a few, but fish were not boiling up and were pretty skittish. So decided to drift for some snapper. The decision was made Friday not to take bait and just use SP. Gotta say it worked a treat!! I started with a gulp turtle back 4" in watermelon and with in minutes had the double. First squire and on a sp. Next was a grassy sweet lip again my first. Both under size but promising. Buy this time I was getting a little peckish, but every time I would pick up something to eat my rod would go off. Gee Bugger
The captain also scored his first sp squire. I only got one keeper squire all others thrown back. We were in 4-5m of water and thought we would try our luck a bit deeper.
No Joy there back to spot x. On again straight away, and few double hook ups. Only one more keeper, with the captain getting his first grassy on sp. We did experiment a bit with different sp's seemed they would hit anything!!
Such a beautiful day on the water call was made to head over to tanga's, another first for us both. Heaps of boats over there!! There were loads of bait fish in the shallows lots of birds but nothing really chasing from beneath. Just about to head for home when a near by boat calls an asks if that is an AF sticker. Great to meet you Greg and Darren!! Bit of a chat and head for home via chasing a Tuna or two. I finally hooked up to a longtail after about 12 months of trying Only to drop him when my line was caught on the captain's lure. Lessons learned secure all lures when hooked up, let the captain deal with it, Just keep bloody pressure on the fish. But from that small taste of being on the other end I can't wait for the next one!! They went quite after that, back to the ramp and ready for the long trip home. Home by 5.30pm and totally stuffed.
That was one of the best days I have ever had out on the water. All up we would have caught 20 odd between us with 2 keepers. As well as an eel on a gulp.
It felt real good to be in the 10% of fisherman for once!
Keeping a close eye on the weather for this week too!!
Cheers Kim.
