    Brissie River Squire session

Headed out onto the river at 3.45 this morning to be greeted by 20 knots of south easter which made it too unconfortabl to head to Mud or even to the front of the wall. There weren't many boats about so I thought I'd give the river rock walls a bash. The water was very low and quite clean at the start and all i could raise was a 35cm tailor on a small hardbody sx60.

Tried various spots without any luck until I found some dirtier water with a depth of about 8-9ft. Managed a small squire on the same lure but the surface was starting to boil and the sounder had some excellent shows so I started throwing the SP's around. Bingo, I found a good patch of squire that kept me entertained for the next 45 minues or so. Nothing big but the numbers were good with about 10 legal fish and half a dozen unders landed between 6am and 645am - great fun on light gear in shallow water! Kept 3 for a feed and released the rest.

Might try it again in the morning.

Nice work mate, nice fish. Its good knowing a couple of places that will still work for you in adverse conditions. Was that the SP that did most of the damage?

    Yeah Murph,

I was throwing the hardbodies and had a light rod rigged with that SP. Once I found the fish there was no need to change the SP type as this was working well.

Good job and the windy made your lucky to score squires on river instead of going to Mud

We were the other silly buggers out in the wind fishing wello, but your approach to the wind was the right one. I did the Whyte Island to Mud trip two weeks ago, and didn't like the ramp or the pressure waves that Brissy river mouth throws up against the wind. How was the water where you fished? Could you get some smooth water where you were? I should explore that part more. It would be great tagging along with someone who knows the Brissy river better than me. Well done!!

You did well OB1. Seems that they were easier to entice where you were than out at Wello. Scalem and I didn't release any keepers. If we did that we'd have starved. A feed is a feed however and the three we kept were great table fish.

    Scalem,

When the wind gets up like that it forces you to check out new territory, which is what I was doing. I have fished the river a fair bit but not so much in recent times, preferring to head further afield. It's silly really because the Brissie River has excellent structure when you sound around a bit. I'm certainly planning to spend more time exploring and plotting new fishing spots in this area and often looking for a fellow explorer. I'll keep you posted.

    Sunday 10/12/06

After attending the wedding of a mutual friend I teed up a repeat session with fellow Ausfisher and flathead expert Franco.

It was the first time Franco had gone squire fishing and we managed to boat plenty more fish although the size was down on the previous day. Franco's skill as a fisherman was quickly evident as he picked up the technique in no time and was holding his own in terms of catch rate.

Next time Franco's promised me a run on the Gold Coast Jack population although after he inspected some of my gear, he questioned whether my maintenance strategy was up to the riggers of the mighty reds.

You're right OB1, there is some great fish to be caught in the Brissie and it's funny to watch people zoom straight past to grounds out in the bay when you're on a nice session in the river!! I've done well there and i think it's time to start again now that the weather has warmed up...

    Nice feed by the way!

    I agree with you T1,

Until I bought my new boat a few months back I did most of my fishing inside the river as I didn't trust the old tub in the bay. I would often be on to a good session with boaties just driving straight past.

So now it's time to rediscover the river.....

Hi Ollie .... or should I say "Ol Mate" !!??? (Did you find out who wrote that msg on your car??)

Thanks for a great (albeit very hung-over [smiley=zzz.gif] [smiley=freak.gif] [smiley=dizzy.gif] [smiley=dizzy.gif]) morning session learning about Brissie river squire. Have to say it DID take me some time to get outta falthead mode and get the action right for those squire ..... but eventually I found the Don't-twitch-don't-wind-do-nothing-Homer-Simpson-snoring-retrieve technique extremely compatible with the way I was feeling mate!

Shame we didn't get stuck into any thumpers, but I wasn't suprised that the bite was a bit sedate after my .40 breath sprayed out and settled onto the water, thus creating a toxic waste fish-kill.

Looking forward to the next session.

...... Oh .... and I wouldn't worry about your tackle being unsuitable for the jacks ......... a high tech, customised, modified, corroded, locked up, welded drag-washer system is perfect buddy!!!! [smiley=grin.gif] [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

    Thanks again mate.
PS I think there's a half eaten tandoori chicken sanga fermenting under your Jeep's passenger seat which I forgot about after I had a near-miss Pro-Hart moment as you were driving home!!
    Ummm ....... Sorry.

    Franco,

Hopped in the car this morning to an unfamiliar odour - not the usual rotting fish smell! I then had to drive over an hour before I could dispose of the culprit - one half of a smelly, poked and prodded but not consumed, tandoori sandwich. I'll take the rotten fish smell anytime......
