Those of you who have read some of my previous reports over the last couple of weeks will have heard me whinging about my inability to bring quality sized flathead to the boat on my last few trips. After a productive Spring I've been going through a lean patch, still catching enough, but only babies around the 30-40cm mark. I was in a funk, a form slump if you will.
Well this morning at Jumpinpin I started the long road back into decent form. On the water at a leisurely 07:30am to fish the last couple of hours of run out and the turn. Conditions were pretty good, with the NE only coming up at about 11:00am. Started with a couple of small ones again before feeling that familiar "clunk" as the plastic was hit on the drop. I'm on, familiar head shakes and a couple of spirited runs on 6lb braid before bringing her to the boat and preceeding to miss twice with the net before it spat the lure!!! (Do'h!) These things happen when your in a form slump. Luckily for me I had hooked the dumbest flatty at the 'Pin, as after spitting the lure it circled back looking for its lost meal and swallowed it again before my eyes. Sweet, you don't need to give me a second invitation. This one was given an ice bath just for being such a dumb ass.
Next cast I'm on again to another solid fish which went 65cm and released. Another couple of resectable fish followed soon after at 54cm and 61cm. The action slowed after about an hour of run in and I went back to scoring only little fish. However it was a welcome relief to get a couple of decent flatties again and while they were still not as big as some of my springtime girls I was still stoked. I'm back baby, I'm back!!! Even better I was home in time for the cricket, it doesn't get any better than this.
